A Call for Do-Nothing Presidents Without Legacies

Richard Ebeling emails:

Dear Bob,

My new article on the website of the Future of Freedom Foundation is on, “A Call for Do-Nothing Presidents Without Legacies.”

Presidents are obsessed with the “legacies” that leave behind after they leave the White House. But the very idea of presidential “legacies” is based on the idea that it is a duty and task of those holding the presidency to somehow impose on America a “vision” captured in a set of government policies.

The fact is, in a free society, presidents under the American constitutional system are nothing more than someone employed to fulfill a small and enumerated set of functions. Therefore, rather than “do-something” presidents trying to leave America in their own ideological and political image, we should call for “do-nothing” presidents who sit in the White House and do what their original and narrow “job description” requires of them under the Constitution.

But beyond that, presidents should leave the citizenry alone, as individuals, to pursue and design their own lives guided by their own ideas and dreams, and leave the matter of “legacies” to the people themselves as they may want or desire to leave something to family or friends or to “society,” as they voluntary choose.

Hence, a free society equals “do-nothing” presidents.

How the Deep State Works

I caught the film, Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, on Saturday.

It provides the story of Watergate through the eyes of the former Deputy Director of the FBI, Mark Felt, who claimed before he died that he was "Deep Throat," the source who provided the inside information to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein that brought down President Nixon.

There is some controversy over whether Felt really is the sole Deep Throat. However, whether he was the exclusive source for Woodward and Bernstein, the film provides excellent insight into how power mixed with personal feuds drives the Deep State.

When I caught the film, there were only about 6 people in the theatre here in San Francisco, so its theatrical run is likely over this week. Catch it if you can. If not be sure to catch it when it hits Amazon, Netflix, whatever.

Catalonian Secession to Create the First Feminist Socialist State?

Anna Gabriel
This is what is being planned for a Catalonian state.

From Global Post:
Spearheading this drive for a free and feminist Catalan state is the Candidatura d’Unitat Popular (Popular Unity Candidacy), or CUP — an extreme left, separatist party reviled by Spanish unionists and often viewed wearily by more moderate Catalans. The CUP has seen a meteoric rise to power over the last decade, from grass-roots activism to securing 10 Catalan Parliament seats in 2015. It vows to build a “socialist, feminist and ecologically sustainable Catalan republic.” The face of the party is firebrand Anna Gabriel, who last year publicly denounced the sexist language often leveled at female CUP politicians in a now-famous video.

BREAKING Details of President Donald Trump's New Aggressive Strategy on Iran

Yet another aggressive move by President Trump in dealing with a foreign power. The old strategy with Iran will be torn up.

Target Liberty has been provided the details of President Trump's " New Strategy on Iran."

Specifically, the plan calls for, as will be outlined to the public on Friday:

  • The United States focusing on neutralizing the Government of Iran’s destabilizing influence and constraining its aggression, particularly its support for terrorism and militants.
  • The US to revitalize traditional alliances and regional partnerships as bulwarks against Iranian subversion and restore a more stable balance of power in the region.
  • The US will work to deny the Iranian regime – and especially the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – funding for its malign activities, and oppose IRGC activities that extort the wealth of the Iranian people.
  • The US will counter threats to the United States and our allies from ballistic missiles and other asymmetric weapons.
  • The US will rally the international community to condemn the IRGC’s gross violations of human rights and its unjust detention of American citizens and other foreigners on specious charges.
  • And the US will deny the Iranian regime all paths to a nuclear weapon.
The President will deliver remarks on the Iran Strategy at the White House on Friday in the Diplomatic Reception Room at 12:45 PM ET.

Pence’s Expensive Stunt

By Laurence M. Vance

It may have cost taxpayers over $88,000 for him to fly to Indianapolis and then walk out on the football game because some players knelt during the national anthem. Pence tweeted: “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.” Trump then tweeted that he had instructed Pence to leave the game if players knelt. Is there anyone in America who actually thinks that Pence and Trump didn’t know that some players would kneel during the national anthem? Funny and tragic that Pence and Trump don’t think that American bombs and drones that kill foreigners who were no threat to the United States do not disrespect our soldiers, our flag, and our national anthem. I guess they believe, like many conservatives, that the flag stands for empire, hegemony, death, and destruction, but in a good way.

HORROR What is Really Going on in Catalonia

Kudos to the Mises Institute for running this important interview (below) with Daniel Lacalle, who is a Spanish economist and libertarian who runs Mises Hispano.

He was interviewed by Mises president Jeff Deist ant the two discuss the facts behind the Catalan independence vote.

Daniel makes the case against secession based on his view that independence would result in less freedom for Catalans.

Jeff disagrees, arguing for self-determination as a fundamental libertarian political principle that contemplates freedom to choose even bad political arrangements.

Daniel's argument provides realpolitik perspective the point that I have been making that it is a mistake when looking at secession to not consider what a secessionist regime would look like. Secession by itself does not necessarily mean better circumstances for the people of a region.

Jeff argues that to be against secession is to be against self-determination, a fundamental libertarian principle. However, I would argue that Daniel is correct. The far left secessionist movement in Catalonia is not about self-determination, in the libertarian sense, but merely a shift in the ruling government that would result in less freedom and less self-determination at the individual level.

Unfortunately, the experience of recent years should caution against basing policy on the urgings of neo-conservative journalists, no matter how persuasively they write.

The NYC-based Antifa group Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement has made an announcement, calling on Antifa groups nationwide to “decorate” their neighborhoods, reports PJ Media. The militant group recently hosted an "Our Enemies in Blue" anti-police workshop at its branch in Brooklyn, NY.

RAM has posted a  professionally produced video called "Against Columbus Day" on the Antifa website It’s Going Down, showcasing destroyed monuments across the country.

Oh Boy, Milo Hacked: His Password Was 'LongKnives1290'

Also from the piece:
In an April 6 email, Allum Bokhari mentioned having had access to an account of Yiannopoulos’s with “a password that began with the word Kristall.” Kristallnacht, an infamous 1938 riot against German Jews carried out by the SA — the paramilitary organization that helped Hitler rise to power — is sometimes considered the beginning of the Holocaust. In a June 2016 email to an assistant, Yiannopoulos shared the password to his email, which began “LongKnives1290.” The Night of the Long Knives was the Nazi purge of the leadership of the SA. The purge famously included Ernst Röhm, the SA’s gay leader. 1290 is the year King Edward I expelled the Jews from England.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said this week that staying with the deal, under which Iran accepted strict curbs on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, was in US national security interests.

The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Joseph Dunford, recently said that pulling out of the multilateral deal, which was signed by some of Washington’s closest allies, would affect US credibility and could hinder the ability of the US to strike security agreements in the future.

After Catalonia Will California Secede?

By Paul Mulshine

I consider the politics of the Spanish-speaking world to be the most rewarding subject of study on the international scene.

The reason is simple: What happens in those countries often occurs later in the rest of the world.

The Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, for example, was a precursor to World War II. It led to one of the most important political books of the 20th century. That's "Homage to Catalonia," George Orwell's saga of his adventures fighting in Spain on behalf of the Spanish Republic.

In the great Spanish tradition, that war had too many competing factions to count. The book tells the story of how in the middle of the fighting Orwell narrowly escaped a purge by the Communists, who were also backing the Republic. That gave him the inspiration for later works such as "Animal Farm" and "1984."

Catalonia's been quiet since then, but now things are revving up again. On Sunday, the Catalans held a referendum on the question of whether their region, which contains the city of Barcelona as well as a lot of beautiful   Mediterranean beaches, should secede  from Spain.

In another country, the vote might have come and gone with barely a ripple.

US Forces Ambushed in Niger

Well, why wouldn't we have US troops in Niger?

A squad of U.S. Special Operations troops were ambushed in Niger, near the border with Mali, U.S. officials tell Fox News.

U.S. Africa Command confirmed that a joint patrol of U.S. and Nigerien soliders came under fire in the southwestern part of the country. The statement did not mention any casualties, but officials are concerned there may be fatalities.

The officials told Fox News that between eight and 10 troops were part of the patrol.

What Mark Zuckerberg Should Tell Washington's Politicians

By John Tamny

USA Today recently reported on a social media user disturbed that she’d been “bombarded by political ads on Facebook attacking Planned Parenthood and the Affordable Care Act.” Apparently Valerie Robinson feels she should have “more transparency” about what ads enter her Facebook news feed, plus she desires “more due diligence and more care with what’s being disseminated to the public” by the Silicon Valley giant.

What Robinson wants doesn’t square with reality.  Facebook is

PROGRESS About 10 Seconds Less Government Harassment in California

Governor Jerry Brown has signed Assembly Bill 390, authored by Assemblymember Miguel Santiago.

The bill "Authorizes pedestrians to enter a crosswalk when the countdown symbol is displayed provided the crossing is completed before the countdown ends."

Not surprisingly, before the bill passed the State Legislature, the California Highway Patrol argued in opposition to it.

Despite the CHP's opposition, the bill passed the State Assembly on a 79-0 vote. It also passed unanimously in the State Senate on a 40-0 vote.

The law officially takes effect on January 1, 2018.

Drama Queen Steve Wynn Pulls Back on His Hotel Luggage Screening

Visitors at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore had bags checked by security upon entry beginning early Monday. Both resorts are managed by casino magnate Steve Wynn.

That worked out well. Wynn, who is buddies with Trump, loves the drama.

When billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, who owned many Vegas hotels including MGM,  was alive, he passed through his hotels without any security--despite being much wealthier than Wynn,

Wynn at the same time, in Vegas, traveled through the lobby of his own hotels, and still does, with Israeli bodyguards.

A top MGM exec once told me, on the other hand, that Kerkorian was so unassuming that

Tillerson’s Fury at Trump Required an Intervention From Pence

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had openly disparaged the president, referring to him as a “moron,” after a July 20 meeting at the Pentagon with members of Trump’s national security team and Cabinet officials, reports NBC News.

It is unclear whether Trump was told of Tillerson’s outburst after the Pentagon meeting or to what extent the president was briefed on Tillerson’s plan to resign earlier in the year.

While it's unclear if he was aware of the incident, Vice President Mike Pence counseled Tillerson, who is fourth in line to the presidency, on ways to ease tensions with Trump, says NBC.
