A Report From New York: People Are Still Wearing Masks (And a Lesson for Libertarians)

More than anything, the bizarre attempt to fight COVID-19 by government mandates to wear masks and the fact that many are still wearing masks, even those vaccinated, when the politicized CDC has given up on the charade, gives you a signal of how many people act on emotion even when logic suggests they should act otherwise. Many have been scared out of their minds others are to fearful to act without support from the crowds.

The number is large.

Gillian Tett of the Financial Times reports:

This would not have looked odd two weeks ago, as New York is one place where the population (eventually) embraced indoor and outdoor mask-wearing with fervour. But last week the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared that fully vaccinated people could shed masks in any setting, as long as permitted by local laws. New York state then dropped its mask mandate for the vaccinated in most public spaces.

Almost everyone I know above the age of 16 is “double jabbed” and kids over the age of 12 are now getting shots too, though New York City says only 49 per cent of adults have had two shots so far.

Yet most people in the street are still voluntarily sporting masks. So too in shops and restaurants. And when I did a recent straw poll among friends at a Sunday brunch, there was only one guest who proudly declared that he had stopped wearing a mask outside...

There is a lesson here for libertarians. Mass movements are not about logic. They are about catching the wave and directing it. The central planners have done such a good job of catching the COVID-19 panic wave and intensifying it with scaremongering press conferences that the absurd government edicts about mask-wearing etc. are now running on auto-pilot for a large majority.

The message that eventually must be delivered to the masses if we want freedom is that private property must be respected and that central power should never be supported.

Math Professors from UCI, NYU, Princeton Warn About the Radical Left Attacks on Accelerated Math Education

 America Is Flunking Math

By Percy Deift (New York University), Svetlana Jitomirskaya (University of California, Irvine) and Sergiu Klainerman (Princeton University)

Among all human endeavors, mathematics stands alone in terms of its beauty, universality, and innumerable applications. Though its role is often obscured by esoteric language, mathematics is behind almost all of humanity’s major advances in science and engineering.

Bridges stand, planes fly, rockets carry us into space, and MRIs can see into our brains thanks to precise mathematical calculations performed by powerful computers, invented by mathematicians such as Alan Turing and John von Neumann. Behind tasks performed by computers—predicting the weather, performing complex financial transactions, or encrypting billions of messages each day—lie sophisticated mathematical algorithms. Artificial intelligence, for example, is but a happy marriage between powerful computers and abstract mathematical models that sort and analyze massive amounts of data.

Before our discipline became the universal global enterprise it is today, great mathematical discoveries passed from ancient civilizations to medieval ones and then to modern ones. One can argue that the preeminence of each civilization was, in part, due to their sophisticated understanding and use of mathematics. This is particularly clear in the case of the West, which forged ahead in the 17th century with the discovery of calculus, one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time.

The United States became the dominant force in the mathematical sciences in the wake of World War II, largely due to the disastrous racist policies of the Third Reich. The Nazis’ obsession with purging German science of what it viewed as nefarious Jewish influence led to a massive exodus of Jewish mathematicians and scientists to America. One of them was Albert Einstein, whom Time magazine would declare Person of the Century in 1999. Science in Germany hasn't returned to its former glory to this day.

The quality of mathematics research in the United States today is the envy of the scientific world. This is a direct result of the openness and inclusivity of the profession. David Hilbert’s ‘‘mathematics knows no races’’ is the living motto of the community of American mathematicians. Indeed, academic institutions in the United States have thrived largely because of their ability to attract talented individuals from around the world. The availability of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professionals, highly trained in mathematics, has been crucial to our success as a nation.

Can Americans maintain this unmatched excellence in the future? There are worrisome signs that suggest not.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development compares mathematical proficiency among 15-year-olds by country worldwide. According to its 2018 report, America ranked 37th while China, America’s main competitor for world leadership, came in first. This is despite the fact that the United States is the fifth-highest spender per pupil among the 37 developed OECD nations. Alas, fewer and fewer young Americans are adequately prepared to embark on a career in STEM.

This massive failure of our K-12 education system trickles through the STEM pipeline. At the undergraduate level, too few American students are prepared for higher-level mathematics courses. These students are then unprepared for rigorous graduate-level work. According to our own experiences at the universities where we teach, an overwhelming majority of American students with strong math backgrounds are either foreign-born or first-generation students who have additional support from their education-conscious families. At all levels, STEM disciplines are more and more dependent on a constant flow of foreign talent.

Rand Paul Slams Fauci

Weeks ago, Senator Rand Paul questioned CDC sociopath Anthony Fauci about his recommendation that those vaccinated should be wearing masks. It turns out that Fauci was lying in his response:

This morning, Fauci admitted to wearing his mask indoors despite being vaccinated was based on political theatre: "I didn’t want to look like I was giving mixed signals but being a fully vaccinated person, the chances of my getting infected in an indoor setting is extremely low":

Below, Senator Paul reacts to Fauci's about-face and also to the CDC continuing guidelines that advise that children continue to wear masks:

There is no question that Rand had a major influence over the CDC change in mask guidance for the vaccinated. Let's hope he has the same influence over the outrageous CDC guidance that children should continue to wear masks.

BREAKING: New York Attorney General Says Trump Organization Probe is Now a Criminal Investigation

New York's attorney general is now investigating the Trump Organization for criminal offenses, The Daily Mail reported late Tuesday evening.

The office, led by Letitia James, had been investigating the company for civil tax offenses since early 2019. The investigation has now escalated.

"We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the Organization is no longer purely civil in nature," said Fabien Levy, a spokesman for the office.

"We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA."

A person familiar with the investigation told CNN that several investigators with the James's office, who are considered experts on the Trump Organization, have joined Vance's team.

Notes the Mail:

It was not immediately clear why the two law enforcement agencies are now collaborating years into their previously separate investigations.

Partnerships between the two New York law enforcement offices are rare.

Seeking power is a very dangerous game, as Trump is learning.

Mask Rebellion...On The Floor of the US House!

Thomas Massie

 By Daniel McAdams

Leave it to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) to take a stand for freedom and liberty! In open defiance of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) rule imposing a fine of $500 (second offense $2,500) for any Member appearing on the House Floor without a face mask, Rep. Massie has organized a maskless protest...right on the Floor of the House of Representatives!

As Rep. Massie Tweeted during a series of votes, where he and a group of Members could clearly be seen up front without face masks, at least ten other Members have joined his mini-rebellion right in front of the Speaker's podium. Maskless, chatting up, fearless. Just daring Pelosi to strike back.

Massie announced his planned protest earlier today via Twitter:

RPI received word from a contact in one of the protesting Member's offices that the maskless Members had received a verbal warning - which they have ignored. It remains unclear whether a written warning or a fine will follow.

In February, Texas Republican Louis Gohmert was fined $5,000 for using the restroom without passing through new metal detectors Pelosi had installed in the wake of the January 6th "insurrection."

On Friday, 14 May, the CDC did a U-turn on its previous policy that vaccinated people should still wear masks indoors and outdoors, stating that the vaccinated could henceforth emerge from their masks in both settings.

Other Republican lawmakers celebrated the CDC's about-face on masks, declaring "Freedom!" - but it was Massie (and allies) today who put that sentiment into action by openly defying Pelosi's adherence to the previous CDC guideline.

Now that "the science" has determined that mask-wearing is no longer necessary, can we start claiming that Pelosi and the Democrats are "anti-science"?

Penn State To Stop Using "Freshman", "Sophomore", Other Terms Because Of "Male-Centric" History

The woke madness never stops.

Penn State is removing all gendered and binary terms from their course and program descriptions to be more “inclusive” reports Human Events.

The Penn State Faculty Senate approved a proposition in April, which would change the terms freshman, sophomore, junior and senior to first-year, second-year, third-year and fourth-year. And, the terms “underclassmen” and “upperclassmen” would be replaced with “lower division” and “upper division.”

According to the proposition, terms like “freshman” and “upperclassmen” carry a male-centric and binary connotation, making them sexist and classist. It adds that terms like “junior” and “senior” are similar to male father-son naming conventions.

The university has supposedly “grown out of a typically male-centered world.”

What’s more, according to Human Events, they want to stray from the use of gendered pronouns when referring to students, faculty, staff and guests in all admissions materials, scholarship information, housing materials and websites.

Words like he, him, his and she,  her, hers would be replaced with they, them, theirs or student, faculty, staff member, etc.

So, even if you identify as a female, you would instead be referred to as a they.

The COVID-19 madness has certainly proved that there are a large number of idiots walking among us and the Penn State faculty, is apparently, aggressively attempting to prove that they are not exempt from expanded idiocy.

REPORT: Bill Gates Thought Jeffrey Epstein Was His Ticket to a Nobel Prize

Bill Gates

A new report out by The Daily Beast will likely ruin the chances of Bill Gates ever getting the Noble Prize and this is going to hurt the freak who was apparently obsessed with being awarded the prize.

Key snippets from the report:

Bill Gates enjoyed holding court at Jeffrey Epstein’s Manhattan mansion, allegedly seeking refuge from his marriage and talking with the sex offender’s circle of high-profile dinner guests about philanthropy and other worldly topics.

But the Microsoft mogul may have been angling for another perk by networking with Epstein: Gates hoped the well-connected pervert could help him secure the Nobel Peace Prize, one former Gates Foundation employee told The Daily Beast.

This person said members of the foundation’s communications team were alerted to Gates’ relationship with Epstein and were told it “was a maneuver to try to get himself a Nobel Peace Prize.” They said the tech mogul had even kept some employees on call on prize day in years past just in case he was awarded the distinction.

---

“He [Gates] thought that Jeffrey would be able to help him, that he would know the right people, or some kind of way to massage things, so he could get the Nobel Peace Prize, which is what Bill wants more than anything else in the world,” the staffer said.

“I think he was ultimately disappointed it didn’t work out,” the person added.

---

The former staffer’s claim that Gates thought Epstein was his ticket to the prestigious prize adds fuel to a Norwegian newspaper’s report last year that highlighted a 2013 meeting with Gates, Epstein, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s chairman at the time, Thorbjørn Jagland...

Bill Gates may have had the prize on his mind in March 2013, when he and Epstein reportedly visited Jagland’s home in Strasbourg, France.

The rendezvous was revealed by Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s largest business newspaper, in an October 2020 report. At the time of the meeting, Jagland was chair of the committee which awards the Peace Prize, and Gates was a potential candidate for the honor.

According to DN, Jagland said Gates and Epstein arrived at the Strasbourg meeting together, and Epstein introduced Gates to IPI for a “polio eradication project.”

They Might Get the Evil Michigan Governor Gretchen "Hard Lockdown" Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's use of a private plane to travel out of state to Florida in March could soon be facing multiple investigations, reports The Washington Examminer.

She was already in hot water just for making the trip.“Gretchen Whitmer’s blatant display of hypocrisy is an insult to every single Michigander impacted by her lockdown orders and travel warnings,” said Ted Goodman, communications director of the Michigan Republican Party, three weeks ago. “Not only did Whitmer and her top staffers vacation to Florida, but they tried to keep it a secret because for Whitmer, it’s rules for thee, but not for me.”

Michigan House Appropriations Chair Thomas Albert also issued a statement at the time the trip ant other trios be members of her administration were first reported:

There are two sets of rules in Michigan – one for the governor and members of her administration, and one for everybody else. The governor’s ‘do as I say, not as I do’ nonsense must stop.
I understand the desire to visit an ill relative, and I hope for good health for the governor’s family – but I have heard countless stories of heartbroken Michiganders who wanted to visit sick family members during this pandemic and haven’t been able to do so. I don’t understand how the governor thinks it’s OK for her and members of her administration to travel out-of-state, while issuing recommendations to the rest of us that we stay home. How can anyone be expected to follow such guidance when the governor and her staff doesn’t follow it themselves?
It’s crystal clear now. If you want to enjoy your full rights and freedoms during the COVID pandemic, the key is to join the Whitmer administration.”

Now comes the revelation that a private plane was used.

Rep. Steve Johnson, the chairman of the Michigan House Oversight Committee, said there may even need to be an inquiry into the financial arrangements behind Whitmer's visit to her father, if her administration is not forthcoming should a letter be sent with questions.

Reports also indicate that multiple aides to the governor, including Elizabeth Hertel, the director of Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services, and Tricia Foster, the governor’s chief operating officer, traveled out of state last month despite guidelines issued by Hertel warning would-be travelers that "travel increases your chance of spreading and getting COVID-19."

"We recommend that you do not travel at this time," says the Michigan HHS travel advisory, which remained in effect during both trips. "Delay travel and stay home to protect yourself and others from COVID-19."

Hunter Biden Runs Inside When Confronted By Journalists

Despite giving numerous soft interviews for his recent memoir, it appears Hunter Biden, son of Sleepy Joe Biden, has no interest in talking to journalists who might be critical of the half-truths and omissions in the book and his controversial foreign business dealings.

Lose Some Friends When You Make Them Take the Tom Woods' COVID-19 Quiz

This quiz is brilliant, though your answers won't be when you take this COVID-19 quiz by Tom Woods.

He writes in his letter:

Well, I've done it.

I said I was going to put together a COVID quiz, and with the help of my friend Tim Scott, it's done.

Now we can really see how much good the devastating restrictions, stay-at-home orders, and all the rest of it actually did.

Let's compare neighboring states that had different policies, and see if people can tell, on an unlabeled chart, which is which.

Let's see if they can tell where Thanksgiving is on this chart of the Midwest. Remember: Thanksgiving should be followed by a big spike. Try to find it!

And so on.

Enjoy, and of course please share far and wide:

We Won! Trader Joe’s was the First Crack in the Armor

By Allan Stevo

For more than a year, Trader Joe’s has been a particularly troubling store for some readers of these pages.

Trader Joe’s has some excellent quality products at a consumer friendly price with a quirky corporate style. What’s not to like about such a place?

When corona communism was implemented after the Ides of March 2020, we saw exactly what was not to like about such a place.

Walter Block on Shooting Coyotes in a Vancouver Park

As a follow-up to Dr. Walter Block's important article, Coyotes in Stanley Park.

We had this brief email exchange:

Hi Walter,

In your heroic recommendation to privatize Stanley Park (I have been there and I agree it is as beautiful as you suggest), you offer two private sector solutions to the current coyote problem in the park:

"It doesn’t take an entrepreneurial genius to appreciate that one of the very first steps of a Stanley Park Corporation would be to round up all of these predators, and either place them in a zoo, or release them into the wilds where they could do no harm."

Would you have an objection to the private owners shooting and killing the coyotes if they thought that was the best solution?

Thanks,

Best,
Bob

---

 Dear Bob:

No objection.

Best regards,

Walter

BTW, it looks as though I will be debating Dr. Block this September in San Francisco on the existence of natural rights. He will debate in support, I will argue against. Details to follow.

Twitter Suspends Politician for Saying Men Can't Give Birth

Francisco José Contreras, deputy to Spain's Vox Party, was locked out of his Twitter account for 12 hours last week after saying "a man cannot get pregnant" because they have "no uterus or eggs," reports Fox Business.

Contreras said in a Facebook post on May 11 that he had received a message from Twitter which informed him that he had violated its policies on "hate speech" for the remarks.

"The hateful tweet (which I was forced to delete) was one that said: ′′A man cannot get pregnant. A man has no womb or eggs"," Contreras wrote in response to the move. "You can see this is already fascist biology. Next time I'll try 2 + 2 = 4."
