BREAKING: Trump Will Meet with Kim Jong Un By May

President Trump says South Korea to make 'major statement' at 7 p.m. Eastern time.. He says he discussed the matter with President Moon.

This is a developing story. Return to this post for updates.

UPDATE

Via The Wall Street Journal:

The Trump administration’s top national-security officials huddled at the White House on Thursday with South Korean counterparts who said they were bringing a message to the U.S. from Pyongyang.

Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the White House national security adviser, as well as officials from the State Department and elsewhere met with South Korea’s national-security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, and intelligence chief, Suh Hoon. The two South Korean officials met earlier this week with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un.

Mr. Chung said he planned to deliver a message from Mr. Kim, according to South Korea’s semiofficial Yonhap news agency. He didn’t specify what the message was and made no comment after arriving in Washington.

UPDATE 2

Various media reports:

UPDATE 3

Trump to meet Kim Jung-un by May.

UPDATE 4

Kim will stop nuclear testing.

UPDATE 5

Chung Eui-yong, South Korea’s national security director, said Kim Jong Un expressed “his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible” and that Trump had agreed to do so by May.

Chung said he was delivering a message — apparently a signed letter from Kim — to the White House that the North Korean ruler had given him and Suh Hoon, chief of South Korean’s National Intelligence Service, earlier this week in Pyongyang.

UPDATE 6

Credit this move toward peace to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, since becoming president in May 2017, he has been pushing for dialogue with North Korea and his administration has done just that.

This is the fruit of that effort. It is not an accident that Trump will be meeting with Kim within the 12-month mark of Moon's presidency.

UPDATE 7

Give Moon, Kim and Trump, if he behaves himself, the Nobel Peace Prize.

UPDATE 8

Neocons going crazy on CNN. They are going to throw cold water on this. UPDATE 9

  1. "Give Moon, Kim and Trump, if he behaves himself, the Nobel Peace Prize."

Why do you think an award to any of the three is warranted? I can see a certificate to Moon and Trump but Kim has not done anything but talk and not launch missiles.

Altogether this seems like a rather small set of accomplishments.

    1. Aside from the fact that the Nobel Prize has become quite meaningless, awarding the prize to Moon, Kim, and Trump for de-escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula would be far more of an accomplishment than what Mr. Obama did for his Nobel Prize.

    2. We don't know What Kim wants in exchange for disarming. I will bet its giving the US the Boot from Korea.

    3. Are you that dense? The two Koreas have been in a state of war for decades. This would be one of the great events of the 21st century if it comes to fruition.

Heath, do you think Trump wants to continue to station tens of thousands of troops there? Isn't it clear by now he's not a neocon?

Bob, soon you'll be saying you were Trump supporter all along.

    4. If Kim’s negotiation demand is the US leaves Korea, I am going to have to agree with Kim on that point.

  2. Justin Raimondo is due a lot of respect but he I think he is missing the likelihood of coordination between SK and the USA playing good cop bad cop with NK. I am no Trumpista but see the Donald’s wishy-washy flip-flopping used as a negotiating tactic. He may not have a strong foundation to his political, economic, philosophical and world views but he does have a strong foundation to his tactics in negotiations.

Don’t be surprised if trade with China is an underground part of the deal with the Korea’s. While they may not be sitting at the table, China has a lot of influence on NK and will use that influence with the agreement from Trump to lessen the trade restrictions.

This is not to advocate for how Trump has and will deal with the Korea’s. It may be mad but there is a method.

    1. Wont be surprised at all if Trade with China is the sole reason everyone is setting down trying to be chummy chummy.

  3. Would have never happened with President Park Geun-hye (or Clinton). Even Moon Jae-in is saying Trump deserves the credit, yet RW still can't shake his TDS.

  4. In response to Justin Raimondo: Would that the peace talks between the two Korea's have ever happened if the US didn't apply such pressure to the North? They've had decades to chat, why now?
If Trump pulls this off, I would expect to see praise from everyone, including those Never Trumpers who for some reason keep eating up the mainstream media's 'coverage' of the White House.

  5. "The president will not have the meeting without seeing concrete steps and concrete actions take place by North Korea, so the president will actually be getting something," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at a news briefing.
