Jordan Peterson Tells Tucker: Truth in speech is of divine significance

Jordon Peterson putting truth on an almighty altar is a very dangerous action.

To be sure, truth should be a very high ideal but it is not the ultimate.

For example, I do not believe there is any obligation to tell the state the truth or anyone else that may be threatening me in a physical manner.

For the person that holds truth as a high ideal (but not the ultimates ideal), a falsehood can be an extremely powerful weapon against dangerous evil lurking.

  1. You would never knowingly lie about economic matters, this is what he means...Lying to a thief or murder to save your life is self defense.

  2. Very dangerous to the person speaking the truth? Sure. Look at the martyrs. Some things are worth dying for. Most people have something that is more important to them than their own lives, be it their kid, their country, or their God.

  3. Nonsense. Atomist, property rights over everything, cultureless libertarianism is a dead-end. There are absolute and objective truths and human flourishing is dependent upon them being maintained and upheld.

The other thing is truth is not simply "not lying."

    1. Are you implying that lying to protect the innocent is immoral? For examples, to protect a Jew in Nazi Germany or a slave from US Marshals pre-1861.

    2. I'm not implying anything; I'm being very direct.

"Truth" and "not lies" are not the same thing.

    3. Not in this clip, but elsewhere Dr. Peterson makes the point that there are things we are going to say that are not true because we just don't have all info, so not knowingly lying can be the best approximation to truth.

  5. Allan Stevo, today on LR, hit the nail on.the head, in my estimation. Said he:

"You must do the right thing at every moment in life regardless of how unpopular it is, regardless of the consequences. That is the duty of a person of values. Seldom do any of us really encounter a situation where we can’t see the difference between right and wrong. You know the difference in this situation, and if you aren’t boldly forging ahead and doing what is right, you are then doing what is wrong."
