Judge Stops Deportation of Pablo Villavicencio!

A federal judge in Manhattan on Saturday temporarily halted the deportation of a New York pizza delivery man at least until a court hearing on July 20, reports The New York Times.

The judge, Alison J. Nathan, of Federal District Court in New York, ruled for the plaintiff, Pablo Villavicencio, after his lawyers filed an emergency petition earlier in the day. In her order, the judge said federal officials must file court documents before the hearing to explain why a temporary preliminary injunction should not be issued in favor of Mr. Villavicencio, who is still being detained.

Reports NYT:
[A]s a judgment was pending on Friday night, the situation got more urgent for his lawyers. They learned that the commissary account for Mr. Villavicencio was suddenly cleared, which is usually a precursor to immediate deportation.
“The focus was to stop him from getting removed this weekend,” Gregory P. Copeland, supervising attorney for the immigration unit of the Legal Aid Society, said. “He’s not getting removed, that’s the goal.”
The next step, Mr. Copeland said, is to get him out of detention.

  1. You know how you can tell this is a win for liberty? By how badly it triggers right-wingers.

    1. The Keebler Elf becoming apoplectic at the idea people want marijuana use legalized is delicious by itself, but seeing Trumpistas going bananas, shredding their garmets and wailing like Dervish zealots every time a little bit of freedom peeks out, is like eating dark chocolate while no one's watching: a guilty pleasure.

  2. So RW, have you thought moving to an African country or dysfunctional central American one? You could live there instead encouraging the importation of more problems. Maybe you could find out and tell us if they are 'natural libertarians."

There's indisputable evidence that Trumpistas aren't natural libertarians at all, just another group of crass Fascists, so why not give these hard-working men and women from Central America a shot, or are you affraid of brown libertarians, you who fantasizes about white European male schlongs?

  3. Take any political position, any at all, and you can find situations where The Children suffer. For every story like this I can give you ten where American families suffered due to crime committed by illegal aliens.

    1. So you’re saying that it’s ok to punish one individual for the crimes of others?

    2. No he makes a point ONLY for enforcing the law. Lets be honest you can be a naturalized citizen and be treated like this anywhere in the country! Some of us wont be swayed by the pity party.

    3. No I'm saying anecdotes of The Children being hurt is a terrible way to make Public Policy. Those on the Left like you rely on it just as you discount those on the Right who come up with equally if not more compelling anecdotes.

If I were on the left, I would probably be arguing that our freedom should sacrificed so that the government can “protect” us.

But that seems to be YOUR position.

    5. One of the signs of a Leftist is that they believe the world should conform to the way they believe it should be, which is why I just assumed you were a Leftist. I believe in working with the world and human nature as it actually exists. Part of that is putting my country, community and family first as opposed to sacrificing them to some ideal of the way things ought to be.

You’re the one urging the state to deport people, so again isn’t it YOU who wants the world to conform to the way you believe it should be?

Personally I could give a shit about left and right. They’re both awful. I’m a libertarian, so I care about freedom.

    7. @Evan, actually the government is our enemy. I just don't want immigrants coming in who I have to support with my taxes. How about no public benefits or assistance of any kind for five years? As for being a libertarian that only works in a fairly homogenous society with a high level of social trust. We have neither. Before the 1965 immigration tragedy we had them, but they are both long gone.

I’m more than OK with no public benefits for life (for anyone, but if it’s just immigrants, that’s a good start.) And freedom always “works” in the sense that, a priori, it produces a comparatively better outcome than state coercion. This is true regardless of he existing demographic composition of society.

And, as has been pointed out many times in the here, some of the largest increases in the US public dole occurred in the 60’s during “The Great Society” movement, when foreign-born population was at an all-time low. Similarly, many Northern European nations have historically had both extremely high levels of ethnic homogeneity and extremely high levels of taxation and regulation. So empirically it’s very difficult to claim that an ethnically homogenous society is especially conducive towards libertarianism.
