How Lithuania Helped Take Down the Soviet Union

Richard Ebeling emails:

Dear Bob,

I have a new article on the “EpicTimes” news and commentary website on, “How Lithuania Helped Take Down the Soviet Union.”

This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the end of the Soviet Union in December 1991. That year began, in January 1991, with an attempt by the Soviet government to crush the freedom movement for national independence in Lithuania. It failed, and demonstrated the courage and resolve of a people wishing to escape from Soviet tyranny and socialist central planning.

I was in Lithuania at that very time advising the democratically elected Lithuanian government on privatization and free market reforms, and personally witnessed on January 13, 1991 the brutal violence against and murder of innocent, unarmed Lithuanians as they stood up against Soviet power.

Having lost their national independence in 1940 at the hands of Stalin as part of his secret pact with Hitler, the Lithuanians defied Moscow’s threats, intimidation and, finally, military force in January 1991. And they made the Soviet government back down.

Their resistance and, indeed, heroism for liberty helped set in motion the sequence of events in 1991 that brought down and wiped off the Soviet Union from the political map of the world.

  1. What an incredible story. It's funny- I've found Lithuanians in the US to be very libertarian. I've only met a few, but many were quick to suss out my anarchist streak.
