Video Released of Chicago Copper Shooting Laquan McDonald 16 Times
McDonald was brandishing a knife and acting erratically. An autopsy showed he was on PCP.
The Chicago cop, Jason Van Dyke, was charged today with murder and was ordered held without bail at a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building in Chicago.

The way this and the predicted protests have been hyped I was expecting something much more dramatic. It's still a horrible crime nonetheless and I hope justice is served.

It's hard for me too see how the cop could reasonably say he thought his life was in danger. It appears that the shooting victim angles slightly away from the cops, even though he's still walking down the street presumably with knife in hand, which suggests, to me, he was not going to immediately attack someone.
Then of course, I can see additional shots fired after the shooting victim is down. The victim doesn't appear to pose any real threat that justified the additional shots being fired. However, you can see the cop kick away the knife after the final shots were fired, so he would likely say that since the victim was holding the knife after going down that justified additional force. I find such an idea difficult to believe.
There's also the fact, as I understand it, that the other cops on the scene didn't fire and evidently didn't feel threatened. And then, after the shooting, the cop went into a McDonald's and erased their security video of the incident. (According to a news report I heard this morning.) That suggests to me he knew he'd committed a criminal act and was attempting to destroy the evidence.
The law protecting cops doesn't only say they have to feel threatened for their life in order to shoot -- it says they have to do whatever necessary to protect the public and the guy had a knife and wasn't obeying orders -- therefore he was a threat to the public. I don't agree with any of this, I'm just stating facts.
I see nothing in the video that indicates the victim was an immanent threat to the public. He was in the middle street. No one was near him. Just because you're carrying a knife that doesn't automatically make you a threat to the public.

Now, do I believe the cop will be convicted? Nope! They almost never are.
