Swedish officials say they’re making a last-minute attempt to quiz WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange over sex crimes allegations, most of which are set to expire by next week, according to NyPo.
Assange, holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012, is wanted on four allegations involving rape and sexual misconduct stemming from a 2010 visit to Sweden, which many observers believe was a set up.
Under Sweden’s statute of limitations, Assange must either be formally charged or cleared of three of the four allegations by Aug. 18.
Charges can’t be laid until Assange is interviewed, and while, according to NyPo, the Swedish government said Wednesday it was in talks with Ecuador about the matter, those discussions are likely to drag past Aug. 18. The expiration of most of the allegations could prompt Sweden to abandon its prosecution altogether.
