"Red Army"

Red Army is a film documentary about the hockey team of the Soviet Red Army, its rise and fall.

I haven't watched the film yet, but Tyler Cowen writes:
Chock full of social science, I loved this movie, philosophical too, even though I am not especially interested in hockey.  One of my favorite documentaries.

  1. I'm so interested in hockey that I climbed on my roof and aimed my chimney antenna at Channel 42 in Sarnia, Ontario so I could watch the 1980 USA/USSR game live at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. The Canadian announcers sounded bored. When the game was over, there was nothing about it on the radio or TV and no one at the stores had any idea. Then ABC showed the game at 9:00 p.m. as if it were live. All hell broke loose. The real power of network TV. Libertarians take note. We have no slick network TV presence. It would help if we did.

I noticed this week that the antenna is still aimed in the same direction because soon thereafter we got cable.

  2. I just saw a stream of this doc...not bad. I wish it had gone into more detail about the actual games (like Summit Series) but I guess that would be too much for a mainstream audience. Gotta love the "get of my lawn" moment at the end when that old Russian guy is criticizing Alex Ovechkin for not having enough country pride.
