A Declaration of Independence from Big Government

Richard Ebeling emails:

ear Bob,

I have a new article on the news and commentary website, “EpicTimes,” on, “A Declaration of Independence Against Big Government.”

People’s liberty is under siege from many directions in America, today, in the forms of economic regulations and intrusions into our private lives due to the surveillance state.

We, therefore, should recall the reasons behind this Fourth of July holiday celebration, other than as an opportunity to grill hotdogs and burgers, and enjoy a fireworks display.

The Declaration of Independence hailed each individual’s right to his life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. What too many Americans have forgotten is the text of the rest of the document. It is a detailed list of the American colonist’s grievances against a British government that had infringed upon personal freedom, abridged local self-government, violated people’s private property rights, imposed burdensome taxes, and strangled commerce and trade between the colonists and the rest of the world through government regulations, restrictions, and prohibitions.

We need to remember, this and every Fourth of July, that what this day of celebration really means is the Founding Fathers declaring their opposition to tyrannical government against personal, political and especially economic liberty.

It is a declaration against big government and its heavy-hand of planning and control over people’s lives. It should be an inspiration for people today for a rebirth of greater freedom in America.
