In light of the Sony hack and associated drama (including a cameo appearance by President Obama), it is important to keep in mind the warning of Harvard Prof. Lawrence Lessig.
During this panel discussion, Lessig, then teaching at Stanford Law School, claimed that the US government has prepared a type of Patriot Act that is in place should a major security event occur, a 9-11 type event. And just like the Patriot Act, it contains all sorts of new restrictions, this time for the internet.
