Like Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln favored colonizing emancipated slaves in Africa or Latin America. But he did insist that “in the right to eat the bread, without leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns,” the black man “ is my own equal and Judge Douglas’ equal, and the equal of every living man.”

DeleteDana Perino barely touched on the reason the electoral college was created by the founders. To mitigate the potential excesses of democracy. Nor did she explain why the electoral college is not racist. In fact it could be just as racist as congress. But the discussion is a tempest in a teapot. The main defense against the excesses of democracy was suppose to be the states themselves and the senators each state selected. Now that senators are popularly elected they are less loyal to the states and their citizens and more subject to special interest pleadings. The electoral college is a very weak part of the system designed to implement a republic not a democracy. From the perspective of individual liberty the US government is a failed experiment and should be abandoned.
