Tulsi Gabbard Accuses Some Fellow Democrats of Anti-Catholic Bigotry

Tulsi Gabbard
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, appeared to accuse fellow Democrats of stoking “religious bigotry” this week for their questioning of a Trump judicial pick’s Knights of Columbus membership, reports FOX News.

Gabbard began an op-ed for The Hill this way:

For too long in our country, politicians have weaponized religion for their own selfish gain, fomenting bigotry, fears and suspicions based on the faith, religion or spiritual practices of their political opponents.
Whether we think of ourselves as Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Sikh, Buddhists, Jews, atheists, agnostics, or anything else, it is imperative that we stand united in our commitment to protect religious freedom and the right to worship or not worship, safely and without the fear of retribution.
Weaponization of everything and anything has to stop. Gabbard needs to be cheered here.

Gabbard added:
While I oppose the nomination of Brian Buescher to the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, I stand strongly against those who are fomenting religious bigotry, citing as disqualifiers Buescher’s Catholicism and his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, If Buescher is “unqualified” because of his Catholicism and affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, then President John F. Kennedy, and the 'liberal lion of the Senate' Ted Kennedy would have been “unqualified” for the same reasons.
Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution clearly states that there "shall be no religious test" for any seeking to serve in public office.
According to Fox, Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, raised concerns about lawyer Buescher's membership in the Catholic organization as part of the Senate Judiciary Committee's review of his nomination by President Trump to sit on the U.S. District Court in Nebraska.

Hirono asked whether his membership in the Knights of Columbus would prevent him from hearing cases “fairly and impartially” and, if confirmed, whether he would end his membership in the charitable organization.

“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions,” Hirono said. “For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage.”

Harris, in her questions to the nominee, according to Fox, called the Knights of Columbus “an all-male society” and asked Buescher if he was aware that the group was anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage when he joined.

  1. Take that, Kamala. Hopefully, with increased attention paid to the DNC hijinks, Tulsi can capture those States populated by sane Democrats (they Do exist I think). She'll certainly take the Catholic vote (that's gotta hurt Biden). I've already started the popcorn.

  2. Some people (some Dems in this story) have trouble understanding that folks (in this case, Catholics) can argue a point they don't like in order to arrive at a more just conclusion. Sign of intelligence really...

I'm a fan of this Gabbard lady.

  3. Sheesh...

“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions,” Hirono said. “For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage.”

How is that 'extreme' for a relatively conservative church that opposes...gay marriage? What is it with people who insist that taking a position contrary to theirs is "extreme"?

And who cares if the Knights of Columbus is "all male"? I notice that's only a problem when men are involved. "All women" is just fine.

These kinds of antics are why I want government to leave not only me, but everyone else ALONE!
