Nearly Two Thousand Children Have Been Separated From Their Families Over the Last Six Weeks

About 2,000 children have been separated from their families at the border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security figures obtained by The Associated Press.

The figures show that 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults from April 19 through May 31.

On Thursday, the very strange Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited the Bible in defending his policy, arguing the recent criticisms were not “fair or logical and some are contrary to law.”

“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order,” he said.

Obey the laws of the government?  Does this mean an order to throw Jews into the ovens is endorsed in Sessions' view in the Bible?

Romans 13 has been regularly used by statists to justify nearly anything the state does. So, to your point, Robert, yes, I would guess that tossing Jews into ovens, if sanctioned by the state, would be just fine with Jeff Sessions.

  3. Statist have been distorting Romans 13 for their own power for a long, long time. At the same time, these so called Christians completely ignore Matthew 5.

  4. How about separation of church and state. As a representative of the government of the USA Sessions has no authority based on Romans 13.

Then there is the question of what Romans 13 says. In the AKJV version the word government is not present. In other versions the word government is present. And now we are into the weeds of translations and interpretations. There isn’t even agreement on what language(s) Romans 13 was originally written. Also how different is that original language to the same language when it was translated from the original text? And how many times has it been translated and interpreted form there?

My understanding is that Saint Paul grew up speaking Aramaic, wrote letters in Koine Greek and was a scholar of Jewish teachings so could at least read Hebrew. When Sessions can accurately translate whatever first century language Romans 13 was written in maybe I will listen.

Now if we are going to look to Romans 13 for how to be subjugated by the government we should understand that it says that “the powers that be are ordained of God”. It also says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.” Have Jeff Sessions and his minions been ordained by God? Hell no. Sessions is a terror to good works “that doeth evil”.

  5. The cognitive dissonance these days with the peace in the Koreas and fascist immigration/family law policy is mind boggling

      Why?

    2. I have to admit complete ignorance on this. How are they not being "turned away" at the border, rather than let in in the first place. Do they not successfully turn people away at the Canadian border?

  8. Who cares what Paul has to say. Those are the words of an ex-soldier, not God.

God was quite clear about government, when he had Samuel tell the Israelites their fate for requesting a king:

"9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

"10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

    1. An apt analogy to our "king", the state: Conscription, taxation, eminent domain, nationalization/regulation of businesses, taxation, taxation, taxation...
