A Day After Trump Said He Wanted US Troops Out of Syria...

The White House said on Wednesday that the United States is committed to continuing to fight the Islamic State in Syria, signaling a retreat by President Trump from his insistence that the 2,000 American forces there quickly return home from the conflict, reports The New York Times.

So much for bringing the troops home and giving Libertarians for Trump something to cheer about.

Notes NYT:
[A] statement indicated that the president’s top military advisers, who have argued that maintaining United States forces in Syria is crucial to defeating the Islamic State and ensuring that the militant group cannot regain a foothold in the region, have succeeded — at least for now — in persuading an impatient commander in chief not to order a quick withdrawal.
Daniel McAdams called it.

  1. And of course nobody on the libertarian front with think to mobilize comments to the White House to put heat on Trump to keep his promise to pull us out of Syria. Instead we're just going to bitch at each other on the blogs. Cuz that would be getting involved in politics. And that's dirty and coercive?

  2. Smart libertarians know when to call a fool a fool and when to spend their time on more productive enterprises than analyzing the dancing orange puppet in the round room!

  3. What’s the best course of action? Try in vain to lobby John Bolton to NOT be a bloodthirsty neocon? You’re not wrong, but what can we really do about it?

    1. Your last question leads down the rabbit hole Economist, or at least thats what most have told me. I try to think locally. In a vast sea of coercion the community the county and the town are scales of influence close to us that we can wrap our efforts around.

How that change works is no more clear to me than the massive convoluted swamp, but at least its on a human scale and the most likely path to some positive impact.

  4. "Mixed messages from Washington over Syria raise concerns in Israel"

"Israelis fear that the defeat of the Islamic State, while welcome, leaves in place Iran, an enemy, and Russia, a country that is friendly to Israel but whose interests are not as aligned as the United States. Russia, notably, has been Iran’s de facto ally in Syria.

The US presence, comparatively, is limited, but simply by maintaining a presence, the United States signals that it has Israel’s back — freeing Israel to take action, as it did in February when Israel retaliated with airstrikes on Iranian targets in Syria after an Iranian drone entered Israeli airspace.

That becomes a much shakier proposition absent a US presence, said Moshe Maoz, Israel’s preeminent Syria expert."
