Oakland Coffee Shop Refuses to Serve Coppers

Hasta Muerte Coffee, an Oakland, California coffee shop, is refusing to serve uniformed police officers, citing “the physical and emotional safety of our customers and ourselves.”

The Oakland Police Officers Association reached out to Hasta Muerte after Oakland Sgt. Robert Trevino was refused service Feb. 16 at the self-described “POC [people of color], worker-owned coffee shop & radical bookstore.”

“Obviously, this is both a surprise and a matter of concern for all Oakland Police Officers,” said Sgt. Barry Donelan in the open letter. “Oakland Police Officers work tirelessly every day to serve the residents of our City. I have never heard of Police Officers being refused service by an Oakland business.”

A few days later, Hasta Muerte doubled down with an Instagram post blasting “police brutality” and complaining about “cop supporters are trying to publicly shame us online with low reviews because this particular police visitor was Latino.”

Coppers are a mixed bag. They are agents of the government who enforce many victimless crime laws. That's bad news. On the other hand, some individual coppers are decent and spend their time policing against real crime---though these are becoming fewer and fewer every day.

Of course, the problem with coppers would be solved if security was turned over to the private sector. I doubt the people at Hasta Muerte Coffee understand this. They just want to be in control of the power structure and force the coppers to enforce the laws they want to be enforced.

  1. Man, a 'da rasis' leftist coffee shop in the heart leftism? Say it ain't so.

So RW, you make post about 'urban primitives' and not too many of them are white. How would a private police force handle these people?

  2. If a policeman sues on the basis that they won't serve him, will he have the same success and popular support on the left coast as have the gay couple who want the baker to serve them? Or is it possible that those on the left coast don't believe there are any universal principles?

    1. I've yet to meet a morally consistent leftist. All hypocritical trash, everyone of them.
