HOT HOT BREAKING Rand Paul Physically Attacked!!!

This is a developing story. Return to this post for updates.

UPDATE 1

Sen. Rand Paul was “blindsided” during an assault in his Bowling Green, Kentucky, home on Friday, his spokesman said Saturday.

UPDATE 2

The senator suffered
minor injuries and is “fine,’’ said Kelsey Cooper, his communications director.

The motive of the alleged assailant, Rene Boucher, 59, was not revealed.

“Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault,’’ Cooper said. “The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police.’’

UPDATE 3

Boucher, who also lives in Bowling Green, was charged with fourth-degree assault and bail was set at $5,000.

UPDATE 4

Boucher is a Bowling Green anesthesiologist and pain specialist who developed a product called Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest partially filled with rice and secured by Velcro straps that is designed to relieve back pain by delivering heat directly to the areas of the back where most pain is felt.

UPDATE 7

Boucher is an acquaintance of the senator, according to  police spokesman, Master Trooper Jeremy Hodges.

UPDATE 8

Paul and Boucher live in the same gated community along Rivergreen Lane in Bowling Green, Ky.

UPDATE 9

Boucher, according to the warrant, admits to going onto Paul's property and tackling him. Neither the warrant nor a charging document written by a Kentucky State trooper describes what preceded the incident. The charging document has a field for offenses suspected to be related to drug or alcohol use, but those boxes are unchecked.

A criminal complaint says that Randl "told police that his neighbor came onto his property and tackled him from behind, forcing him to the ground and causing pain."

Rand suffered injuries to his face, including small cuts to the nose and mouth and “and had trouble breathing due to a potential rib injury." At the time the report was made Rand was being seen by a physician and the extent of any rib injury was unclear, the complaint says.

Boucher admitted to tackling the Senator, the criminal complaint says.

It is unclear when he will return to Washington, aides said Sunday.

UPDATE 15

Doug Stafford, Rand’s chief of staff, said in a statement Sunday that the senator has five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures, meaning the bones are partly or completely cracked.
“This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force. It is not clear exactly how soon he will return to work, as the pain is considerable as is the difficulty in getting around, including flying,” Stafford said.

UPDATE 16

Rand’s recovery could last several months. Such fractures can cause other significant medical problems, including internal bleeding, damage to other organs or pneumonia.

UPDATE 17

Via The Washington Post:

Jim Bullington, a former member of the city commission, knows both men. He said Sunday that Boucher is divorced and lives alone. Bullington described Boucher as a socialist.

“He’s pretty much the opposite of Rand Paul in every way,” Bullington said in an interview.

The neighbors had been known to have “heated discussions” about health care, Bullington said, adding that Boucher is an advocate of a national health system.

UPDATE 18

Both Capitol Police and the FBI are now investigating the incident.

  2. All the accounts I have read mention an "ongoing feud". Who will discover the feud details.

  3. Cutting his grass... Rand probably the only person in the Senate that does mundane ordinary chores. Insularity, this is why these clowns in DC can't relate to the average working stiff but people like Rand can.
