What You Need to Know About Catalonia’s Independence Referendum
Catalonia’s independence referendum is due to take place on October 1st, in clear defiance of the Spanish government.
Like most revolutions, most separatists movements are generally not about liberty but about new forms of interventionist rule---some are better some are worse.
That said, I do like the turmoil of separatist movements that the ruling government has to deal with.
Here is a mainstream report on the Catalonia independence movement. You have to look past the establishment propaganda theme that creeps into the video but the basic facts are reported.

VIDEO College Student Steals A Guy’s MAGA Hat, Insanity Ensues
A University of California, Riverside student stole another student’s “Make America Great Again” hat. Then, she marched to a campus office and demanded that administrators outlaw “Make America Great Again” hats because they represent “genocide.”
At one point, the student whose hat was stolen says, “You do not get to take other people’s property that is legally theirs.”
The student cap thief responds, “Man, fuck your laws, alright?

The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request from several members of Congress to waive shipping restrictions, known as the Jones Act, to help get gasoline and other supplies to Puerto Rico as the island recovers from Hurricane Mari.

Trump on the Warpath
By Jeffrey D. Sachs
Fifteen years after George W. Bush declared that Iraq, Iran, and North Korea formed “an axis of evil,” Donald Trump, in his maiden address to the United Nations, denounced Iran and North Korea in similarly vitriolic terms. Words have consequences, and Trump’s constitute a dire and immediate threat to global peace, just as Bush’s words did in 2002.
deral elections
Back then, Bush was widely praised for his response to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. It’s easy to rally the public to war, and that was especially true after 9/11. Yet, on every front – Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and North Korea – US militarism squandered global trust, lives, finances, and precious time. And Trump’s approach is far more belligerent – and dangerous – than Bush’s.
For Trump, as for Bush, there is

“Well, because it’s uncomfortable, and there has to be an uncomfortable element in the discourse for anything to change. Whether it’s the LGBT movement, women’s suffrage, race, it doesn’t matter. People have to be made to feel uncomfortable, and especially white people because we’re comfortable. We still have no clue of what being born white means,” he stated.

One of the mysteries of human history is how a handful of rulers succeed in gaining the loyalty and obedience of large numbers of subjects and citizens, when historically the origin of the state has been in conquest and plunder, and continues to be used for coerced redistribution of wealth through taxes and regulations.

The Full Story Behind America’s Dangerous Anti-Iran Posturing

In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump and his advisers have joined Saudi Arabia in accusing Iran of being the epicenter of Middle East terrorism. The US Congress, meanwhile, is readying yet another round of sanctions against Iran. But the caricature of Iran as “the tip of the spear” of global terrorism, in Saudi King Salman’s words, is not only wrongheaded, but also extremely dangerous, because it could lead to yet another Middle East war.
In fact, that seems to be the goal of some US hotheads, despite the obvious fact that Iran is on the same side as the United States in opposing the Islamic State (ISIS). And then there’s the fact that Iran, unlike most of its regional adversaries, is a functioning democracy. Ironically, the escalation of

Gottfried Slams Milo: "The Right’s Version of Kim Kardashian"
![]() |
Milo |
A few days ago I brought home from our local library, nestled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, Milo Yiannopoulos’s self-published livre de scandale.Dangerous is supposedly dynamite, because even Milo’s putative adversary Bill Maher praises the author as “a young, gay alive Christopher Hitchens.” Milo promises that anyone who makes it through his book can learn how “to fight back against campus commies, their enabling professors, the mainstream media, and establishment Republican bores.” All one needs to acquire this ability is Milo’s text, providing the reader can get though his frenetic prose centered on his activities as a self-promoting gadfly.I’ll concede two things to Milo. One, unlike his erstwhile patron, the sulky Steve Bannon, he can turn a phrase; and although much of what he writes is vacuous, he says what he sets out to say with wit and verve. Two, he has spent much of his young, tumultuous life courting friends who could advance his career as some kind of conservative celebrity, from Bannon and the staff at Breitbart to David Horowitz and more recently, Tucker Carlson. I’m less impressed by the fact that Milo’s dashed around on campuses, challenging academic political correctness in the name of his notion of self-liberation. His adventures have not exactly been life-imperiling. So-called conservative speakers are invited to what are called institutions of higher learning by local Republican organizations, and these organizations, together with Washington-based groups, help pay for their trip and expenses. Since these appearances are likely to create a ruckus and cause demonstrations, provisions are made to protect the speakers. But if the situation looks really threatening, then the presentation is cancelled, and the snubbed “conservative” (as a lavish consolation prize) is invited on to Fox News to tell his story. As someone who spent more than 40 years battling the PC and other intolerant Lefts on American campuses, without the slightest assistance from Republicans or the conservative media, I am hardly bedazzled by Milo’s daring or showmanship...The only reference to a serious political thinker that I can locate in Milo’s book is to Leo Strauss on page 42, and even that reference is so fuzzy (It seems that Strauss told us that “scholars should seek to understand the author as he understood himself.”) that it’s hard to understand why the quotation is there. Yes I know that I’ve made fun of “cultural conservatives” who make wooly philosophical arguments while trying to stay clear of delicate policy questions. But plowing through hundreds of pages dashed off by the Right’s version of Kim Kardashian in what is an intellectual wasteland, may be worse than ivory-tower conservatism.Allow me to point out that Milo and other past and present claimants to the Alt-Right label have one thing in common, a passion for raising havoc while leaving theoretical agonies and the deep learning to others...As a public figure he is mostly about whirling energy tied to an unconventional lifestyle that fits into the socially leftist but also libertarian factions of the current youth culture. Milo is good at mocking but it’s hard to see what in Western civilization he is specifically trying to save, other than his right to sound off.
RW note: I'll have my own review of the book up in a few days.

North Korea Threatens Hydrogen Bomb Test Over Pacific Ocean
So much for Trump's idiotic sanctions plan.
Via The Wall Street Journal:
North Korea’s foreign minister said the country could detonate a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean in response to President Donald Trump’s speech before the United Nations that warned the U.S. would annihilate North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies. What really needs to be tried is serious dialogue, where North Korea is treated with respect.
The threat, made in remarks by North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho in New York and reported by South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, would mark a dramatic escalation in action from Pyongyang, which in the past month has already launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles over Japan and tested what it claimed was a hydrogen bomb.
“Maybe we might consider a historic hydrogen bomb test over the Pacific Ocean,” Mr. Ri said outside his Manhattan hotel, according to the Yonhap report. The last above-ground nuclear detonation in the world was China’s atmospheric test of a hydrogen bomb on Oct. 16, 1980.
Trump is boxed in because an attack on North Korea would have to wipe out the entire country and poses a risk of millions dead in South Korea---and that's if everything goes according to plan.
Kim Jong un understands this--and so you have two nut jobs taunting each other, with Kim having the better hand--unless you really go nuclear.

Why Trump Needs to Shut Mueller Down Now!
Japan’s Dennis Rodman? An Ex-Wrestler, Politician and 32-Time Guest of North Korea
By Motoko Rich
Forty-one years ago, Antonio Inoki, one of Japan’s most popular professional wrestlers, faced off against Muhammad Ali in a bout that critics called a farcical publicity stunt.
Last week, some commentators leveled similar criticism at Mr. Inoki, now a 74-year-old member of Japan’s Parliament, as he returned from North Korea, where he said he had visited a zoo, sipped ginseng wine and discussed nuclear diplomacy with high-ranking officials.
“He told me Pyongyang will continue its nuclear testing and take it to a higher level unless the global community, especially the U.S., stops applying pressure,” Mr. Inoki told reporters at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, referring to Ri Su-yong, a vice chairman of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
Though Mr. Inoki — a flamboyant ex-athlete with a taste for self-promotion — has been in politics for decades, in some ways he is Japan’s equivalent of Dennis Rodman, the former N.B.A. star who has made numerous visits to North Korea.
It is a sign of North Korea’s international isolation — and the limited avenues available to understand it, much less influence it — that Mr. Inoki and Mr. Rodman are among the world’s few links to the leadership of Pyongyang’s opaque, authoritarian state.
Mr. Inoki’s five-day trip to North Korea this month was his 32nd since 1995, when he participated in a wrestling match in Pyongyang. In an interview in his Parliament offices, Mr. Inoki — sitting near a life-size cutout of himself with a raised fist, an image soon to be used in advertising for Toyota — said his ultimate goal was “to establish peace through sports diplomacy.”
He said that North Korea’s top officials wanted to engage in dialogue, but believed that in the face of overwhelming American force, their only option was to develop nuclear weapons. (Unlike Mr. Rodman, Mr. Inoki has not met Kim Jong-un, the North’s leader.)
“The United Nations, Trump and Japan are all saying we need to apply more pressure,” Mr. Inoki said. “But first we need to listen to them and understand what the reasons are behind their activity.”
