Jeff Deist Calls for Trump Letting Venezuelans Into the United States

Let them all into the U.S.?
Mises Institute President Jeff Deist put out two tweets yesterday calling for President Trump to issue immediate immigration status to Venezuelans.

Jeff is an important thinker and influence in the libertarian movement and any views he holds must be considered carefully but I find myself urging caution on this proposal.

I have generally been on the side of allowing immigrants into the United States but it has always been in conjunction with calling for a Welfare Wall.

This is why I have not objected to undocumented sneaking over the border into the United States who come to work but have objected to the refugee flow into Germany that has resulted in those refugees ending up on the government dole.

Thus, I urge caution in advocacy of immediate immigration status for Venezuelans. It is fine if they are coming to work here or have other means of supporting themselves but it should be an advocacy that makes clear that open immigration to Venezuelans should not include access to the greater welfare state.

  1. Deist is spot on. We need more socialist brown people in America in order to achieve true freedom.

    1. Would Venezuelan escapees be innoculated AGAINST socialism?

    2. It would be interesting to know whether they believe capitalist saboteurs are responsible for their plight.

  2. Being a Venezuelan, I object to such idea. Venezuela has been a very socialist country for decades before Chavez got into power. Still those living there are to the right of Bernie. A country is as good as its people.

Every time I meet a new Venezuelan in the US, they all bring their welfare mentality. Nothing good can come from it.

  3. When an "immigrant" is allowed into a PPS, they must obey the rules of the owner. When an "immigrant" is allowed into a social[ist] democracy, they can vote to grab as much property of others as they can grab and they can even vote to abolish private property.

My observation as a libertarian since 1973 is that libertarians should try to communicate like they're from Detroit as opposed to being egghead intellectuals. Just a thought.

    1. Great comment Roddis! But then again, I might be biases, having been born in Detroit and lived there for 14 years.

  4. Humanitarian or not someone behind the scenes is rubbing their hands together and saying let no crisis be unexploited and you know this "refugee" situation will be seized by the SJW set to push their agenda.

  5. There are 7 billion people in the world. Do all of them have the right to settle in the US?

    1. Think of it as 7 billion Steve Jobses, Bill Gateses, George Washington Carverses, Elon Musks, Nikola Teslas, Ludwig von Miseses, etc... all adding their powerful productivity and innovation to our economy and our society. Yeah, I know not all are at that level, but enough of them are that their contribution, seeded in the fertile soil of freedom and individual liberty (what we have left of it), would greatly improve our quality of life.

    2. I'm pretty sure Elon Musk is tapping the taxpayer. Bill Gates doesn't seem to have much reverence for capitalism either.

    3. Well, Peter, with that logic we should just open the borders to anyone from anywhere.

    1. I was just thinking that culturally, aren't Venezuelans much more socialistic in ideology than the average American? Won't allowing them into the US increase the number of socialists?

  7. Scary.

At first I thought Deist wast giving political advise rather than advocating immigration status based on his personal beliefs. But he includes, "do the right thing by letting them into the US". So it is "the right thing" for one person to have the power to decide who can enter the US?

  8. Jeff is wrong.

The Venezuelan majority supported the socialist policies of their Chavista government. Bringing in Venezuelans will simply bring a socialist hardcore to America.
