Stephen Kinzer: Regime Change: Roots of the Imperial Temptation”

The best lecture I have ever heard on how the U.S. got to be imperialist.

  1. This is excellent.

However, a question to the history buffs out there: shouldn't we trace the roots of American imperialism not to the Spanish-American War, but to Lincoln's War to Prevent Southern Independence? It seems that once the puritanical North finished its conquest of the South, and concluded that imposing its will on others by force was eminently doable, the next logical step was to look farther afield.
