HOT Justin Amash Breaks With Republicans Says Comey Memo Could Merit Impeachment

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) tyhis morning said reports that President Trump pressed ousted FBI Director James Comey to end an investigation would merit impeachment if true, becoming the first Republican lawmaker to broach the idea, reports The Hill.

It should be noted that the memo is part of a battle between different factions of the Deep State and not a libertarian issue.

This is a strange issue for Amash to go out on a limb on. It is certainly not going to cause Trump, if he survives, to look kindly on the Freedom Caucus.

  1. How can Amash consider Comey trustworthy? This is a catch-22: If Trump attempted to obstruct justice and Comey was aware of it then he is obligated by law to immediately report it to the Justice Department. So either Trump didn't obstruct justice, Comey is lying, or Comey himself broke the law.

  2. Article II, Section 2, clause 1, of the Constitution, under the Pardon Clause, says the President “shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” So how could Trump's mere suggestion to the FBI Director to lighten up on a retired general not be a proper exercise of his clear constitutional powers? The instrument has been stretched so far that it is already in shreds so now its actual explicit terms are ignored by right, left, and libertarian-lite alike.
