UC Berkeley Bans Ann Coulter

UC Berkeley has banned  Ann Coulter from speaking on campus citing security threats.

According to Young America’s Foundation, student organizers of an upcoming Ann Coulter event at the university were emailed by Berkeley administrators who claimed they were unable to “find a safe suitable venue” for Coulter.

Young America’s Foundation, BridgeCal and Berkeley College Republicans have been working together to produce a lecture at UC-Berkeley on April 27, 2017 by  Coulter.

Coulter had agreed to all Berkely demands to ensure safety and requested two of her own:

1) That the University of California chancellor request that the Oakland chief of police refrain from telling his men to stand down and ignore law-breaking by rioters attempting to shut down conservative speakers, as he has done in the past; and

2) That UC-Berkeley announce in advance that any students engaging in violence, mayhem or heckling to prevent an invited speaker from speaking would be expelled.

Coulter explained, “If Berkeley wants to have free speech, it can have it.”

The university’s response was to ban her speech.

Young America’s Foundation says they will hold the speech anyway.

The venue remains unknown at this time.

UPDATE

Officials at the University of California at Berkeley reversed their decision to cancel the Coulter speech.

The university said it had found a venue where it could hold the speech on May 2, instead of the original April 27 date. However, a leader of the college Republican group that originally invited Coulter said the university was placing strict conditions on the event, and he said his group intended to reject the new terms.

  1. What a disgrace. Berkeley has become a symbol for the absurdity of Leftist anti-free speech hysteria and violent chaos. The good news is that there don't seem to be that many defenders of this behavior even among the Left.

What type of pussy college is bullied into banning a speaker because of "security threats"? Just have sufficient security present, and immediately arrest any violent protesters and expel the students who are among them. Take a stand.

  2. Fantastic! Just the way to run society, with the "Heckler's Veto" deciding what may or may not be spoken. The sanctimonious lefties of Berkeley must be celebrating today, and planning for similar victories around the country. I'm no fan of Ann Coulter, but I hope she DOES show up anyway, and that her supporters deal with those who would shut her down by whatever means prove necessary.

I didn't think much of Berkeley administrators when I studied there in the 1960's, but they never stooped this low. Not even close.

  3. I think libertarians and Austrians should calmly smile and realize that our opponents act like this because they cannot refute us and they know they can't refute us.

Why should we ever act surprised? The entire "identity politics" thing is just a desperate attempt to make sure no one comes around with Thomas Sowell's facts showing that discrimination has little or no impact on income levels. Shutting us out of Facebook or Twitter is just their admission that they cannot refute Austrian Economics or non-interventionism.

Be happy. We've won. They know it.

    1. I agree, though less sanguine.

I agree that socialist economics has failed, but they will find another justification for trying to run other people's lives.

  4. Coulter says she's rejecting the new date and speaking on the original one. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-04-20/uc-berkeley-flip-flops-on-ann-coulter-proposes-may-date

  5. love that all y'all think heckling is a valid reason for expelling a student. You think free speech only belongs to those that target individuals and distributes hate, but not to those rejecting those beliefs.

Go back to your cross-burnings and stop hiding behind your hoods. free speech only works when you're accountable for your opinions. If you can't deal with the backlash to your opinions, maybe they aren't worth the air you so desperately cling to.
