Putin Reacts to US Missile Attack

The Russia has responded to the  US launch of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha'irat near Homs.

"President [Vladimir] Putin regards the US attacks on Syria as an aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of international law, and under a trumped-up pretext at that," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday. told reporters.

Putin also sees the latest US missile strikes on a military airfield in Syria as an attempt to distract from the mounting civilian casualties in Iraq, the Kremlin added.

"Putin also sees the attacks on Syria by the US as an attempt to divert the international community's attention from the numerous casualties among civilians in Iraq."

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had confirmed that Syrian armed forces do not possess chemical weapons, the Kremlin cited Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying Friday while warning of the danger of ignoring terrorist use of chemical weapons.

Meanwhile, Russia plans to increase air defenses in Syria.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it would be beefing up the Syrian army's ability to shoot down enemy warplanes in the wake of strike.

“To cover the most sensitive objects in Syria’s infrastructure a set of measures will be soon implemented to strengthen and improve the effectiveness of the air defense systems of the Syrian armed forces,” a statement said.

The Ministry also mocked the effectiveness of the attack, saying just 23 of the 59 tomahawk cruise missiles fired from US Navy destroyers had hit their target.

"The combat effectiveness of the US massive missile attack on the Syrian air base is extremely low," the statement continued.

“These actions of the American side are seen as a flagrant violation of the memorandum signed in 2015 on the prevention of incidents and safety during operations in Syrian airspace.”

  2. I know Putin is no angel (his acts of repression within Russia are pretty horrible), but compared to American politicians he comes off as both well informed and measured in his response to international incidents.

  3. I never would have believed it if you told me when I was a kid that in my middle age I'd see the Russians as more sane than the US when it comes to foreign policy.

    1. Amen to what you said.

I remember as a teenager in the 1980's thinking the Russians/Soviets were the worst of the worst.

Today, I think the Russians are far more sane than the United States is.

  4. And really? Just 23 of the 59 tomahawk cruise missiles fired from US Navy destroyers had hit their target? That's not much over 33%. Not much bang for the buck if true.
