Is Trump "The New Boss Looking a Lot Like the Old Boss"?

Now that Donald Trump has named a number of establishment figures to his Cabinet and White House staff I am seeing a lot of comments like this: "The new boss looking a lot like the old boss," from those who recognize that he is not a libertarian panacea.

But Trump appears to be much worse than this.

I still don't think most get it. Om the domestic front, Trump is going to be much more authoritarian than any president in recent memory.

Further, the U.S. is going to crank up its military efforts overseas, at least in Iraq/Syria and Afghanistan. It is going to, at a minimum, intensify destabilization efforts of the current regime in Iran.

And unfortunately, he will have a percentage of the population who will be rabid supporters.

I can see the support here in the comments. Trump apologists are many. There is nothing he can't do that isn't excused.

If he calls for the stripping of citizenship for those who burn the flag, he is "shrewdly setting the conversation."

If he names a warmongering individual to his Cabinet, again he is being "shrewd."

This is all very scary.

Trump is an out of the box thinker, with much energy. BUT he has no understanding of how a free society would work.

It is not going to be pretty. Trump is not Obama 2. Things are going to get serious.

  1. You're probably right but the degree or "worseness" is yet to be seen. I'll know it's been cranked up to eleven if I see the rabid Trump supporters in my area (and you are correct, some are very rabid) wearing red USA caps like the one Trump was sporting the other day. That whole thing seems to be some kind of authoritarian visual programming straight out of the Hugo Chavez playbook.

  2. For now, a couple good things we got out of Trump is the end of PC nonsense with 'da rasis' and 'da sexis'. You are less likely to be attacked for Christianity. You can speak more freely about some things.

I do hope the Trump administration can roll back this global warming garbage and the number of destructive regulations which has crushed job growth. Maybe the Team R in congress including the cucks can pass real tax relief and a limited government proposal.

I'm a disenfranchised Ron Paul supporter. This is the first presidential election I bothered to shop up in 20 years. Some feet will have to be held to the fire.

  3. There is a large percentage of the male population in this country that likes to throw caution to the wind, and invest the whole of their emotional being behind a domineering leader like Trump. Because American males want to believe in this type of authoritarian leader they disregarded all the warning signs that Trump evidenced in his bearing, speech patterns, and specific threatening language uttered on the campaign trail. Donald Trump told us who he was all along but the vast majority of men refused, and still refuse to pick up on Trump's militarist, and authoritarian core beliefs. Most, but not all American males will cheer wildly when Donald Trump bombs the hell out of Syria, Iraq, and especially Iran.

When George W. Bush ran for congress he had an awkward and graceless style of walking when campaigning amongst the public. Fast forward to 2000 when George W. Bush had by then adopted a slow affected style of strutting that sought to awkwardly emulate the strut John Wayne adopted early in his acting career. George W. Bush lost the race for congress, but won his first presidential campaign in part because of a cowboy strut that someone had taught him would win over the male population. I remember Charles Goyette telling a story of how a man from Texas said he liked the way Bush walked, how Bush talked, and that was enough to sell him on George W. Bush's candidacy.

In the 56 years I have watched presidential campaigns, emotion has continually dominated reason on the campaign trail. Reason, and long term consequences rarely if ever move the typical American male in any way shape or form. American men believe that the aura of power exuded by a strong male leader envelopes, and empowers them in a way that holds reason at bay.

I am afraid our situation is far worse than even we can imagine at this point. We are really screwed.

    1. That makes me really sad. I, too, believe that Trump will be horrible for our liberties in the short run, but I also believe that he will be so awful that libertarians are seen as an alternative.

  4. You may be right but your analysis is no more factual than drudge or any other trump fan. Only time will tell. I was just talking about this last night. I will judge him by 3 things

    1) No new wars (Like how obama added libya, syria, yemen)

    2) Significant tax cuts

    3) Less domestic business regulations after 4 years than there are now

If he doesn't accomplish those 3 things, he is a failure.

  5. So Robert in your opinion, do you think Trump will be worse than FDR and/or Lyndon Johnson? Not trolling just asking a legitimate question

    1. What an awful thought. I, personally, I believe he will be worse than both.

  6. “People are wonderful. I love individuals. I hate groups of people. I hate a group of people with a 'common purpose'. 'Cause pretty soon they have little hats. And armbands. And fight songs. And a list of people they're going to visit at 3am. So, I dislike and despise groups of people but I love individuals. Every person you look at; you can see the universe in their eyes, if you're really looking.”

  8. I mostly agree with you, however, if Trump manages to overturn Obamacare with Congress, it might save all our lives. The good doctors are leaving the profession left and right, and I personally know at least two doctors that refused to pay for their children's college if they chose to go into medicine. Let's hope they eliminate Obamacare and manage to accidentally replace it with something that doesn't fundamentally guarantee we all die younger. I fully realize that's not a guarantee by any means, but I also realize that getting rid of Obamacare was a nonstarter under Clinton.

  9. Robert Wenzel is ridiculous. He is so shocked goldman sachs bankers are in the beltway. What is new about this? If anything less than the Libertarian Unicorn is selected for some cabinet position its a jaw-dropping shock to Robert Wenzel. I'm sure Hillary would have nominated Ron Paul for Treasury right? Stop crying.

    1. You're kidding right? Trump's ENTIRE friggin platform was "drain the swamp" and HRC is in Goldman's pocket and "he's fighting for the little guy" ... now he's putting GS partners and billionaires into his cabinet positions ... its LITERALLY the exact opposite of his campaign

Trump fanboys are as bad as the bitcoin fanboys of a few years back ... that ended oh so very well for them too ...

    2. Steven Mnuchin just told CNBC he would look at extending the maturity of future Treasury issuance, hinting at 50 and 100 Year bonds. What does that signal any sentient being? Well for starters it means that President Trump intends to run the Federal government like he ran his businesses by loading up on debt. The new Treasury Secretary has not even been confirmed and we already have the odious scent of an authoritarian government bent on spreading destruction far and wide that is fueled by 100 year bonds. What's not to love?
