Via NYT:
Donald J. Trump said in an interview with Fox News that if he were president, he would go to Congress and ask for a “declaration of war” to combat global terrorism. Not a clue that the attacks are blowback. Trump is itching to go to war.
“I would, I would,” said Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee. “This is war. If you look at it, this is war. Coming from all different parts. And frankly it’s war, and we’re dealing with people without uniforms. In the old days, we would have uniforms. You would know who you’re fighting.”
Mr. Trump, who was calling in from California, was responding to a question from Bill O’Reilly.
He also said he would use NATO forces to wage war on terrorist groups.
“I’ve been saying it: We should use NATO for a purpose,” Mr. Trump said, reprising some of his criticisms of the alliance from the campaign trail.
UPDATE
From Trump's buddy "who will have a role in a Trump Administration."

Truck-terrorist was a French citizen https://t.co/xRu4N9vuWH which is why the idea of invading Syria to beat ISIS is a nonsequitur.

Robert, we need to cut Trump some slack until he wins the election. Then he will do a bigtime fake-out and come out as an anarcho-capitalist libertarian. I believe!
ReplyDeleteMany have proved their true colors are closer to Paleo conservative that anarcho-capitalist libertarian.
DeleteRobert, I think you may be missing the big story here. Trump wants congress to declare war. Just like the constitution demands. That's a slap in the face of every post-WWII president. He knows the GOP is filled with bloodthirsty warmongers. He saw Ron Paul get booed for mentioning the golden rule. He also knows there is no chance of a declaration of war because there is no way to define in advance with whom we are at war. This is just talk to rally the base. The real story isn't that a candidate talks like he wants war. Every candidate except RP talks like that. The real story is a candidate talks like he wants to follow the constitution.
ReplyDeleteThe Congressional declaration of war for WWII resulted in the suspension of the Bill of Rights and massive increase in federal power over people and property, a great deal of which didn’t end after the war. The US Constitution doesn’t authorize any of that from a Congressional declaration of war.
DeleteRon Paul also talked about declaring war on Iraq- not because he wanted to go to war (he said he would vote against his own resolution)- but because for the US to go to war, Congress needs to approve it.
