Trump is a genius of manipulating any situation to go his way. If people accuse him of supporting gay marriage, he flips it on them. If someone talks bad about New York, he conflates them with al Qaeda on 9/11. This guy can talk circles around Ted Cruz, who is obviously a phony and a neocon pretending to be a populist. Trump may be a phony as well but he does a better job of concealing it.
