Robert Weissberg on Campus Unrest

By David Gordon

Robert Weissberg, a distinguished political scientist, has called attention to a curious phenomenon. At a number of universities, what Weissberg calls “race-related protests” have occurred. The demonstrators, alleging discrimination, have engaged in disruptive tactics and threaten more of the same if their long lists of demands are not met. Weissberg notes that, against what one might expect, the presidents of the besieged universities have received the demonstrators in friendly fashion. Why have they done so? Weissberg suggests that they see the demonstrations as an opportunity to force out professors who do not conform to the politically correct line that is now in fashion. These presidents are not interested in the pursuit of truth but rather see as their prime mission to “keep the peace.”
