The Missouri University Police Department sent an email to students Tuesday morning urging them to call them and report any "hurtful speech" they encounter on the campus.
In an email, the MUPD asked “individuals who witness incidents of hateful and/or hurtful speech or actions” to call the department’s general phone line “to continue to ensure that the University of Missouri campus remains safe.” They suggest that students provide a detailed description of the offender, their location or license plate number, and even to take a picture if possible.
The email comes one day after University President Tim Wolfe resigned under pressure from students for what they considered a lackluster response to racial incidents.
The kids are apparently also attacking the media:
The University of Missouri student protesters who demanded the resignation of university president Tim Wolfe were surprisingly adversarial toward the press Monday, setting up a “no media safe space” for protesters and harassing reporters who were trying to take photos.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch‘s sports writer Benjamin Hochman tweeted out images of protesters linking arms to create the “safe space,” and also tweeted out a video of protesters clashing with a reporter who presumably infringed upon the safe space.

This is positively bizarre stuff. The kids don't want coverage of their protests?
And now we have the Mizzou police encouraging the idea of "hurtful speech" as a problem.
The problem on campus seems to me to not be racism but a failure to understand the importance of everyone being able to have their say regardless of how nutty it might be. Shutting down speech is a very dangerous road to go down. As is the road that objects to the media covering an event.
These kids need a required course in classical liberalism.

They are trying to replicate the 'anonymity effect' of social media (You can't see me, so I get to spout off (tweet) as much as I want without the discomfort that might come with a one-on-one interaction. I am brave because you cannot see me, but you must listen!) in real life.
ReplyDeleteThey want to force their demands on others with no ramifications later on. After all, what if the MU boycott didn't turn out as they wanted?! Then there might have been repercussions (loss of scholarships, getting thrown out of school, being embarrassed), but this way, they get the fun of a live group session without having to worry about getting in trouble when the adults get back.
