Practicing Freedom: Markets, Marriage, and Migration

Richard Ebeling emails:

Dear Bob,

I have a new article on the news and commentary website, “EpicTimes,” on, “Practicing Freedom: Markets, Marriage, and Migration.”

Practicing the principles of liberty is a demanding task, requiring consistency in ideas and acceptance in the actions of others things we may strongly disagree with or consider personally unattractive.

Unfortunately, we live in a time in which many do not understand the logic of liberty and, instead, advocate collectivist policies of coercion to make others conform to their own conceptions of “just” or “right” living.

Three examples are: labor market regulations in the same of “social justice”; restrictions on freedom of association, most recently in relation to the legalization of same-sex marriage; and, barriers to freedom of movement from one country to another under the myth of collective ownership of a nation-state.

All are examples of restraints on the individual’s rights to his life and liberty and the freedom of association in forming personal or commercial relationships. They threaten, each in their own way, the vital and essential principles without which a free society is not sustainable in the long run.
