TRUMP: I am Running for President

Donald J. Trump, from the lobby of his Trump Tower in New York City, has declared he is running for the presidency.

His announcement speech was filled with an overall theme that government must be involved in all kinds of sectors of the economy..

On the trade front, he singled out China, Japan and Mexico as countries that must be battled. On the immigration front, he said that Mexico is sending drug dealers and rapists into the United States."Mexico is not our friend," he said.

Indicating he has no understanding of comparative advantage, he asked "Why aren't there any Chevrolets in Tokyo." But, further, Trump somehow seems to think that the US government should be involved in managing trade. Bizarrely, he said he was in favor of free trade, but the added you need smart people in government to negotiate trade agreements. He also indicated that he would tax Ford Motor 30% on any cars produced in Mexico and sold in the US. So much for free trade.

Trump correctly declared that Obamacare really kicks-in in 2016 and "it is going to be amazingly destructive," But he then added that he wants to "replace" Obamacare "with something better that covers everyone."

He also declared Iran and ISIS a major threat. He said he would be the toughest on ISIS and find the next General Patton, or General MacArthur, that would take care of ISIS.

Bottom Line: Trump is running as the "can do" candidate.

Hayek warned in Chapter 10 titled Why the Worst Get on Top, in his book The Road to Sefdom:
In this stage it is the general demand for quick and determined government action that is the dominating element in the situation...It is then the man or the party who seems strong and resolute enough "to get things done"...
