The Republican Party of Virginia has chosen to hold a statewide primary open to all voters to choose a presidential candidate on March 1, 2016, also known as Super Tuesday.
The 42-39 vote, with one abstention, by the GOP’s state central committee at a meeting on Saturday dealt a blow to the party’s conservative wing, and the Rand Paul wing, that favored a party-run convention.
Conventions have traditionally been the method for Virginia Republicans to back presidential candidates, with brief exceptions in the late 1980s and in 2000 and 2012.
Primaries usually result in the selection of a more mainstream candidate, because of a much broader and less politically engaged electorate. Delegates to state conventions tend to support constitutional and social conservatives.
