The Anti-Growth Crowd is Slowly Being Squeezed in the People's Republic of San Francisco

As Silicon Valley expands into San Francisco, the pro-growth crowd is having more of a say. The below is a development that is apparently scheduled for construction just blocks from where Twitter has its office in what I considered a generally rundown area of the city (bordering on the Teenderloin)

From SocketSite:

High above the proposed plaza to transform the intersection of Market and Van Ness, the “skylounge” on the 28th floor of the proposed One Oak tower would offer some rather spectacular views for the building’s residents and guests, as would the private balcony for the Grand Penthouse A on the building’s 39th floor.

And then there’s the landscaped terrace on the 13th floor, which would include 3 BBQ areas and a fireplace, with a 6-foot windscreen and canopy to protect it from the elements.

  1. I've been going to SF since 2004 when I got out of graduate school and without interruption have either stayed on Van Ness near Nob Hill or on Market near the Civic Center/Westfield Mall. To put it mildly, it's a warzone all day long. You never really feel safe or comfortable or get free of odd smells, filthe, and other assorted grossness. Given the stunningly stark transitions between single blocks in terms of quality and development, I've been saying that this portion of Market is overdue for a wholesale razing and rebirth. I applaud the efforts of the developers of One Oak and hope it leads to more revamping of the area.
