Prof. Sowell is one of the greatest living economists in the U.S. and is absolutely correct about the welfare state. But after decades of teaching at Stanford and writing and lecturing, the ideas this man has presented have not even slowed the growth of the welfare state. He is not the only one to brilliantly articulate the case for the free market during the recent past, and all to no effect. Until a larger number of people recognize that the differences between people does not entitle one group to initiate coercion against another group (no matter the rationale) these ideas will continue to fall on deaf ears.
