Iowa Libertarian Candidate for US Senate Dies in Plane Crash

Dr. Douglas Butzier, who was running as a Libertarian candidate in Iowa for the U.S. Senate , has died in a plane crash.

According to the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, Butzier was the pilot of the plane that crashed around 11 p.m. Monday near Dubuque Regional Airport. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

According to the Des Moines Register, a poll just prior to Butzier’s death showed Butitzer polling at 3 percent, in a very close race between Bruce Braley (at 46%), a Democrat, and Joni Ernst (at 47%), a Republican.

The poll numbers are now expected to move in Braley's favir.
