A Day (And Night) in the Work Life of Walter Block

As I reported yesterday, Walter Block is in San Francisco for a few days and last night he attended a special meeting of Circle Rothbard.

Walter provided those of us in attendance with great theoretical insights along with stories of his interactions with everyone from Ayn Rand and Murray Rothbard to Alan Greenspan. A great time was had by all.

At one point Max Paderewski asked Walter, what his schedule was like and when he found time to write.

Walter "confessed" he had trouble getting started writing everyday. First he said, he spends time answering emails every morning, , he then reads LRC, EPJ and Target Liberty, then he reads some columns on chess and then plays some solitaire (He claimed Ayn Rand played solitaire while she wrote Atlas Shrugged). He said he then, generally heads out for lunch, and maybe a swim. But, get this, upon return, he starts writing and stays in his office writing until 11:00 PM!

The Nonsense That Peter Schiff Has To Put Up With

By Chris Rossini

Here's a good one.

A CNBC host makes the following statement to Peter Schiff:
I don't think a 2% inflation level would actually make people poorer. I think this is really in line with economic growth.
Think about what this woman is saying.

If a mugger takes 2% of your purchasing power (and keep in mind that the mugger is telling you it's only 2%) you're not actually poorer!

Peter handles this (around the 4:53 mark) along with much more:

It's Official: Sen. Paul Introduces Declaration of War Against Islamic State

Sen. Rand Paul earlier today introduced S.J. Res. 46, to declare that a state of war exists between the organization referring to itself as the Islamic State (ISIS) and the government and people of the United States.

TEXT OF RESOLUTION:
Whereas Article I, section 8, of the United States Constitution provides, “The Congress shall have the Power to ... declare war”;
Whereas President George Washington, who presided over the Constitutional Convention, lectured: “The Constitution vests the power of declaring war with Congress. Therefore no offensive expedition of importance can be undertaken until after they have deliberated upon the subject, and authorized such a measure.”;
Whereas James Madison, father of the Constitution, elaborated in a letter to Thomas Jefferson: “The constitution supposes, what the History of all Governments demonstrates, that the Executive is the branch of power most interested in war, and most prone to it. It has accordingly with studied care vested the question of war in the Legislature.”;
Whereas James Madison wrote in his Letters of Helvidius: “In this case, the constitution has decided what shall not be deemed an executive authority; though it may not have clearly decided in every case what shall be so deemed. The declaring of war is expressly made a legislative function.”;
Whereas the organization referring to itself as the Islamic State has declared war on the United States and its allies; and
Whereas the Islamic State presents a clear and present danger to United States diplomatic facilities in the region, including our embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and consulate in Erbil, Iraq: Now, therefore, be it

Empires & The Domino-Effect

By Chris Rossini

The recent (and alleged) Cosby rapes shed some important light on human behavior. And that behavior can be translated into our world of Empire vs. Liberty.

There was a very noticeable domino-effect that took place after the first few allegations made the news. Women started coming out of the woodwork with their own claims that Cosby raped them as well. I've lost count of the total, but once they deemed it safe to go public, they did.

I don't want to focus on whether or not the allegations are true. That's not important to this article. I do, however, want to focus on the domino-effect. Once that first domino falls, the rest come in rapid succession.

What does this have to do with Empire vs. Liberty?

Well, at this moment in time, we live in an era where The Empire (and its army of apologists) believe they are invincible. There are no limits to military adventurism and no limits to the amount of money that can be printed.

As with all Empires, its subjugated vassal states play along. Foreign nations have no problem sucking up as many U.S. taxpayer dollars as are handed to them for obedience. However, as history has more than proven, obedience to Empire is not unconditional.

At some point, and it's impossible to know when or which nation, the first domino will fall. Some nation will have had enough, and it will be in their interest to be the first domino.

It's a very good thing that such an event is completely unpredictable. If it were possible to know of it in advance, the Empire would be able to stop it.

Let's look at the British Empire, which came before the American version. Take notice of how Britain's subjugated nations declared independence (like dominos):
Click for larger image
Yes, the American Empire is a bit different. It's more of a currency empire. The U.S. has military bases all over the world, and has occupied places like Iraq and Afghanistan, but the rest of the world is occupied financially. None dare abandon the dollar. The U.S. freedom fighters would be on their doorstep immediately.

However, it's inevitable that some country or countries will break rank in a big way. At that point it will be safe for all the other dominoes to follow. No one likes to be the first. It's much easier to wait, take the American taxpayer largesse, and wait for someone else.

As libertarians, our job is educational. When the inevitable happens, our ideas must be dominant. Will it happen in our lifetime? Our kids lifetimes? Our grandkids lifetimes?

Who knows? That's not important.

What is important is that our ideas will outlive us no matter what. If they are dominant exactly when they're supposed to be, then we will have done our job well.

Ludwig Von Mises and Murray Rothbard did their jobs exceptionally well. They're not here to see the spectacular advances that their work has brought forth, but their ideas are still with us and are being understood and accepted by an ever-increasing number of people.

The point is not to wait until it's easy. Don't wait until Jim Cramer says that he has always considered gold to be the premier currency. Anyone can do that. That's the easy road.

Take the ideas of Liberty and spread them them now, when it's tough. Our opposition is arrogant. They're pompous. They're cocky. The masses who have bought their lies are just as arrogant and pompous as well.

So what. Tell them the truth anyway.

They won't be able to un-read it.

They won't be able to un-hear it.

They won't be able to un-learn it.

How Do You Bring Up a Child in a Police State

By John W. Whitehead

“It’s been three weeks since the flashbang exploded next to my sleeping baby, and he’s still covered in burns. There’s still a hole in his chest that exposes his ribs. After breaking down the door, throwing my husband to the ground, and screaming at my children, the officers – armed with M16s – filed through the house like they were playing war. They searched for drugs and never found any. I heard my baby wailing and asked one of the officers to let me hold him. He screamed at me to sit down and shut up and blocked my view, so I couldn’t see my son. I could see a singed crib. And I could see a pool of blood. The officers yelled at me to calm down and told me my son was fine, that he’d just lost a tooth. It was only hours later when they finally let us drive to the hospital that we found out Bou Bou was in the intensive burn unit and that he’d been placed into a medically induced coma.”—Alecia Phonesavanh, the mother of Baby Bou Bou

After a year dominated with news of police shootings of unarmed citizens (including children), SWAT team raids gone awry, photo ops of militarized police shouldering assault rifles while perched on top of armored vehicles, and reports on how the police are using asset forfeiture laws to pad their pockets with luxury cars, cash and other expensive toys, I find myself wrestling with the question: how do you prepare a child for life in the American police state, especially when it comes to interactions with police?

Do you parrot the government line, as the schools do, that police officers are community helpers who are to be trusted and obeyed at all times? Do you caution them to steer clear of a police officer, warning them that any interactions could have disastrous consequences? Or is there some happy medium between the two that, while being neither fairy tale nor horror story, can serve as a cautionary tale for young people who will encounter police at virtually every turn?

Rand Paul: I "Begrudgingly" Support the US Getting Back in the Middle East

Yesterday, at the WSJ CEO Council conference in Washington DC, Rand explained the problem with US intervention in foreign lands, but then, amazingly, stated he is in favor of intervention:

"  we are now going back to the Middle East ... which I ... support the grudgingly... the reason I give is cuz we have an embassy or consulate to [that] should be defended [in Syria.]"

As Justin Raimondo put it recently:
Sen. Paul is here establishing a whole new principle: the rather loopy idea that we are compelled to go to war whenever one of our "diplomatic facilities" is endangered. Which means we should’ve declared war on Iran when they took over our Tehran embassy in 1979 – and bombed the heck out of the Egyptians when they besieged our Cairo embassy in 2012. If we attacked every country where our embassy or consulate has been surrounded with threatening protesters screaming "Yankee Go Home!" we’d have invaded the whole of South America and half of Asia by this time.

Hillary Unable to Put Asses In The Seats At Georgetown

By Chris Rossini

Hillary Clinton gave a speech at Georgetown to this:
I did take notice that (unless they're hidden from view) I can't see the following of Hillary's many demands for when she speaks:
On the stage: lemon wedges, room temperature water, a carafe of warm/hot water, coffee cup and saucer.
By the way, you know who does put people in the seats?

Ron Paul Weighs in on Obama's New Pentagon Chief

Gorbachev Accuses US of Stoking ‘New Cold War’

Mikhail Gorbachev claims that American "triumphalism" is stoking a new Cold War and called for "avid militarists” to stop dragging Europe into conflict, reports the Telegraph.

Gorbachev said there was still time to defuse the standoff between Moscow and the West, as he and his western counterparts had done during the Perestroika period.

“Now there are once again signs of a Cold War,” he said in an interview with Tass, the state-owned Russian news agency. “This process can and must be stopped. After all, we did it in the 1980s. We opted for de-escalation, for the reunification (of Germany). And back then it was a lot tougher than now. So we could do it again.”

Gorbachev said he thought the United States was largely to blame for the confrontation today. “I don’t want to praise our government too much,” he said. “It has also made quite a few errors, but today the danger comes from the American position. They are tortured by triumphalism.”

The Russians appear to be much more rational and eager to find a peaceful solution to current conflicts than the warmongers here in the US.

Remember, though confused about economics, Gorbachev allowed the Soviet Union to collapse rather than ordering Russian troops into the neighboring satellite countries to put down protests.

He set this policy from the very start of his rule:
Immediately after the funeral of my predecessor, Cherenko, I called a conference of political leaders of the Warsaw Pact countries and told them clearly that now we were actually going to do what we had for a long time been declaring: we would adhere strictly to the principle of equality and independence, which also included the responsibility of each party for the  development of its own country.
This meant that we would not commit acts of intervention or interference in their internal affairs. My counterparts at  that conference, as I came to understand later, did not take what I said seriously. But I did adhere to this principle and never departed.
Gorbachev understands clearly what the ramifications of this policy were:
One of the results of free choice in the Warsaw Pact was a development of a "let's get away from Moscow." At the same time this was the decisive impulse behind the disintegration, and ultimately the collapse of the USSR itself. Neocons Love Obama's Likely Defense Secretary Nominee

It's Ashton Carter, a theoretical physicist and former Harvard professor with an expertise in nuclear policy.

Carter served in the Pentagon under Presidents Clinton and Obama and rose to be Deputy Secretary of Defense in October 2011.

According to the New Republic, he is well-connected among the national security establishment, He  "has advised nearly every major strategy group, research council, and governmental panel on issues of international security."

Moss significant the noecons like him. VOX reports:
Carter is respected by many on the right: he was unanimously confirmed by the Senate to be Panetta's deputy in 2011, Sen. John McCain has called him "a hard-working, honest, and committed public servant," and conservative commentator Jennifer Rubin wrote in 2013 that Carter's appointment could "add some muscle to an administration that has too rarely backed up its rhetoric with action."

How To Scrub The Government Stench From A Story

By Chris Rossini

If you're a team-player in American media, your job is to take any problem and remove the government stench from it.

It doesn't stop there though. You must then portray the problem in a way that tasks government with providing the solution!

Do those two things, and you'll be showered with "access" coupled with lots of cocktails and cheese.

We saw one example with the recent New Yorker cover on Ferguson. The problem was not accurately portrayed as government employee vs. unarmed teenager.

No...no...no...It's black vs. white:

How is government now going to solve this "black vs. white" problem?

Let's now look at an example from today.

Black Friday sales were weak. Is it because Americans have been strangled by government, its central bank, and the military black hole?

No...no...no...Not according to BusinessInsider.

Here's the top story that has been up most of today:

It's a "Class Problem".

How is government now going to solve this "class problem"?

Funny thing is, when you click on the actual story, the word "class" never appears in it. The headline is bait and keeps attention off the villains.

So remember, step one is to remove the government stench, followed by framing the problem in a way that government action is needed for a solution.

Do those two things, and you'll go far kid.

Is Valerie Jarrett Obama's CIA Handler?

Following this post, Zach Tatum emails:
Who the heck is Jarrett?

She grew up speaking Persian!  Perhaps the CIA handler to Obama?

I noticed her since way back when I was supporting Obama in 08 (I've grown).  But back then I brushed her aside as harmless. The more I see now, the more it seems she really is the pivot point for almost everything involving the White House, and has been so  since the very beginning of Obama's rise to power.  What gives?  Is Obama really giving the orders, as he appears, or is Valerie Jarrett perhaps the power behind the throne?
According to Wikipedia, Jarrett was born in Shiraz, Iran, to American parents James E. Bowman and Barbara Taylor Bowman.  As a child, Jarrett spoke Persian and French.  She earned a B.A. in psychology from Stanford University in 1978 and a juris doctor (J.D.) from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981.

Jarrett's father was from 1953 to 1955 chief of pathology for the Medical Nutrition Laboratory at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado.

The  Fitzsimons Army Medical Center from 1974 — was a U.S. Army facility located on 577 acres in Aurora, Colorado, USA. The facility opened in 1918 and closed in 1999; the grounds are currently being redeveloped for civilian use as the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Fitzsimons Life Science District.

The Anschutz Medical Campus was where Aurora, Colorado shooter James Holmes "studied," before shooting up an Aurora movie theater.

Breitbart notes:
Jarrett was born in 1956 to American expatriates in the aftermath of the CIA-assisted coup that deposed Mohammad Mossadegh.
It is also noteworthy that Vernon Jarrett was one of the best friends and a colleague of Frank Marshall Davis, the former Chicago journalist and lifelong communist who moved to Hawaii in the late 1940s and years later befriended Stanley and Madelyn Dunham and their daughter Stanley Ann, the mother of Barack Obama

Paul Kengor wrote in 2012:
Here, I will try to be brief and to the point.

In 1940, Frank Marshall Davis got involved in one of the worst communist fronts: the American Peace Mobilization. Congress called the group "one of the most notorious and blatantly communist fronts ever organized in this country" and "one of the most seditious organizations which ever operated in the United States." The group's objective (in 1940) was to stop the United States from entering the war against Hitler. Why? Because Hitler had signed a non-aggression pact with Stalin, and American communists, being loyal Soviet patriots who literally swore allegiance to the USSR, saluted Stalin.

One of the first examples I found of Frank Marshall Davis getting noticed by Congress was a 1944 Congressional report listing his involvement in the American Peace Mobilization. That same report also cited the involvement of a fellow Chicagoan named Robert Taylor. Taylor was the grandfather of Valerie Jarrett.

Taylor also served with Davis on another communist front, the Chicago Civil Liberties Committee, whose members masqueraded as civil-rights crusading "progressives." The two served on the board together.

Both Taylor and Davis would have frequently encountered another politically active Chicagoan, Vernon Jarrett. Vernon Jarrett and Frank Marshall Davis worked together on the small publicity team of the communist-controlled Packinghouse Workers Union, which Frank Marshall Davis publicly called for nationalizing. Vernon Jarrett would one day become Valerie Jarrett's father-in-law.

So, here we have Obama's mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, working with the literal relatives of Valerie Jarrett -- all serving together in Chicago's Communist Party circles in the 1940s.
Communist-affiliated groups, Iran just before teh coup and Aurora, Valerie Jarrett's father sure did end up in some interesting places. And, I guess, Valerie now has also.
