BREAKING: Pelosi says the House will move to impeach Trump if he doesn’t resign ‘immediately.’

This is a developing story. Return to this post for updates.

UPDATE 1

The mad lady of the House is not going to stop.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now saying that the House would move to impeach President Trump over his role in inciting a violent mob attack on the Capitol if he did not resign “immediately,” appealing to Republicans to join the push to force him from office.

In a letter to members of the House, the speaker invoked the resignation of Richard M. Nixon amid the Watergate scandal, when Republicans prevailed upon the president to resign and avoid the ignominy of an impeachment, calling Trump’s actions a “horrific assault on our democracy.” (via NYT)

UPDATE 2

I repeat my remarks from an earlier post, this is the real coup. Under the guide of Trump as some kind of threat to the country during his last days in office, this is the start of an attempt to end Trumpism and all opposition to the Democratic Party.

  1. Quite the political gamble from Speaker Pelosi. For one her justification in her letter is that Trump "incited" the crowd to attack the Congressional building. But nowhere in his speech did he make a call for violence or rioting. You could say Trump raised the temperature in a perverid fashion, but his only call was to have his supporters protest the confirmation of the certification of votes. He in no away incensed the crowd to violence. So why do this now 12 days before Trump's term ends. This just seems like political postering and Pelosi is gambling that Trump simply resigns to her threat. Even if impeachment goes through in the House there is no way the Senate would vote to convict. I doubt McConnell will even hold a vote on it, what's the point? Though maybe Pelosi's plans are to impeach in the House wait for the new Democratic majority in the Senate and then try to get the votes to disbar Trump from ever serving in any political capacity again. Still the Senate being split 50-50 makes this unlikely as they would need 2/3rds of the Senate to do that. Seeing as Trump did nothing illegal and it is not wise to appear disloyal to Trump's base for 2024 I doubt this will go anywhere. At this point I can only assume Pelosi is gambling that there is enough support behind her threat and a few voices in Trump's ear that might convince him to resign. Still Trump's pugnacity and narcissism makes that unlikely. A game of political chicken is unfolding.

  2. In my fantasies, Trump burns the place down before he leaves: Fires everyone in the federal government, pardons all federal criminals, and declassifies all confidential documents. Gosh, that would be fun.

  3. The comparison to Nixon is ludicrous. He had 29 months left in his term; Trump has 12 days.

  4. Speaking of impeachment, the big pile in the room is that Biden already admitted to what they tried to frame Trump for the first time around.
So does that mean China Joe will be impeached/resign shortly after taking office and our first historic minority woman president takes charge of the ship of state as it heads for the rocks?
