Socialist leaders are very good at alliances and using everyone around them but when it comes to that final push to the top they will take down anyone around them.

It should not be forgotten that Leon Trotsky was one of the seven members of the first Politburo, along with Joseph Stalin.

When Trotsky later got in the way and ended up in exile in Mexico City, Stalin had Trotsky assassinated by Ramón Mercader. On August 20, 1940, Mercader attacked Trotsky with an ice axe and Trotsky died the next day in a hospital. Mercader ended up in a Mexican prison but Stalin presented Mercader with an Order of Lenin in absentia.

Trotsky's last words were "I will not survive this attack. Stalin has finally accomplished the task he attempted unsuccessfully before."
