VIDEO Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel Clash With Police After Anti-Military Draft Sit-In

According to The Times of Israel, "the demonstration was organized by the extremist Jerusalem Faction, which has spearheaded protests rejecting army service, and was themed on a call for the release of draft-dodging student Yitzhak Aryeh, who was arrested by police at the end of November and has been in military prison ever since."

Demonstrators also demanded that no changes be made to current laws granting broad army exemptions to members of the ultra-Orthodox community who study in religious seminaries, known as yeshivas.

Conscription exists in Israel for all Israeli citizens over the age of 18 who are Jewish, Druze, or Circassian; Arab citizens of Israel are not conscripted. Other exceptions are made on religious, physical, or psychological grounds. The normal length of compulsory service is currently two years and eight months for men (with some roles requiring an additional four months of service), and two years for women.

Leading active Olympic-related athletes in many cases are granted an "Outstanding athlete" status which allows them to get a more convenient and shorter service.

The draft is evil. Good for the protesters.

  1. Not one of these protesters is subject to the draft. What they object to is filling out paperwork to maintain their exempt status.

"Demonstrators also demanded that no changes be made to current laws granting broad army exemptions to members of the ultra-Orthodox community who study in religious seminaries, known as yeshivas."

    Also...

"Current regulations that allow ultra-Orthodox seminary students to defer their mandatory IDF service were set to expire at the beginning of the month, and without the extension, thousands of yeshiva students would have become eligible to be drafted."

    Hasn't happened and unlikely to.

As an "Ultra Orthodox" Jew myself, I can tell you that 85% or more of us want to have nothing to do with these troublemaking miscreants. This is like the "Ultra Orthodox" version of AntiFa.

    1. Why should anyone have to even do so much as lift a finger, to avoid being enslaved?

    2. @ Sui-Juris

These same people would have no issue with setting up and controlling a central bank that would then lend a nation's money into existence and in effect, enslave its citizens. They don't like the idea of manual labor or danger is all.

  2. I don't know which story of yours---this one, or the one about employers being arrested for hiring illegal immigrants---boggles my mind most; The idea that in this modern age, people still not only accept but also hold up as honorable and patriotic, the act of a government enslaving its own citizens via a military draft. So sad.

  3. There is no morally defensible argument for conscription -- where one man uses force to require another man to work for him (and, worse, to kill and destroy for him) -- and its enforcement is a stark reminder of the incomparable evil that is the state.

    1. How naive of you, Napster. The state is divine; it is the Whole of which we are a part. We are not working for other men . We work for the state, we kill for the state; and by doing so we protect the state and ourselves. There is only one true state: our state. All others are beholden to the one true state. Please, for your own peace of mind, get with the program.

  4. Slavery?? Do these fools not understand that if we give evil a new name and make it legal, it becomes a good? Duh!
