Leftist Wins Presidential Election in Landslide

There is a message for Trump fanboys here but they won't acknowledge it: Populist revolution is not good if it is not based on an appreciation of free markets and liberty.

The New York Times reports:
Riding a wave of populist anger fueled by rampant corruption and violence, the leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected president of Mexico on Sunday, in a landslide victory that upended the nation’s political establishment and handed him a sweeping mandate to reshape the country.

Mr. López Obrador’s win puts a leftist leader at the helm of Latin America’s second-largest economy for the first time in decades, a prospect that has filled millions of Mexicans with hope — and the nation’s elites with trepidation.
It is yet one further indication of how far on a worldwide basis the entire population is from an appreciation of liberty.

It mystifies mean as to why there is not a more aggressive attack by libertarians against Trump who is out of the same basic mold as other statist populists, with a slightly different statist agenda.

Statist should be our enemy everywhere, even if they are populists. Blindly cheering a populist agenda merely because it is anti-elitism is a grave error.

Crony elitists are very bad but populism not grounded in a desire for liberty is almost always worse.

  1. We need to invade Mexico, and takeover the first 100 miles. Put some competent white people in charge and get the cartels out of the way and restore some order.

LM: All that's needed to win the War On Drugs is to have competent white people in charge...

    2. Yes, Torres, or he who fantasizes about duh-versities, we know you are anti-white. No need to post that anymore here.

    3. But Lab who are we to interfere with the free market anarchy alive in border Mexico.

Why that would be ... such a bad statist thing to do! Its far better that the free expression of the populace be upheld!

  2. Wait, Obrador is both a Nationalist and a Socialist. Does that make him a National Socialist? I guess that makes him the one who is Literally Hitler?

      Indeed, just like a Trumpista.

    2. @Francisco, are you agreeing with me or are you saying Trump supporters are National Socialists? I guess then we should get along famously with Obrador.

Not 'Trump supporters.' Learn to read. I said 'Trumpistas'. Some people supported Trump because of SCOTUS or the promise of lower taxes and lower regulations and not because of his sparkling personality, his views on immigration or the panache with which he treats women and their vaginas. Trumpistas, instead, are economic-illiterate, xenophobic, nationalistic, credulous boobs who place the blame for their own mediocrity on immigrants, brown people, the Chinese who 'rape us', trade deficits, eeevil corporashions, the Market or 'the forces of globalization' -─just one step before blaming the lizard people.

You know, people like Trump. Trumpistas.

  3. According to a statement by Obrador: "Soon, very soon, after the victory of our movement, we will defend migrants all over the American continent and the migrants of the world who, by necessity, must abandon their towns to find life in the United States; it's a human right we will defend,' Lopez Obrador said in a June speech reported by El Universal."

So now it is a universal human right to sponge off the American taxpayers? We always knew that most of the Left world wide acted like it was true. It's refreshing to finally hear a prominent Leftist admit it in no uncertain terms.

    1. Robert, stop being so negative. Don't you know that all those migrants are just 'natural libertarians' who will add to the tax base and create jobs and vote for limited government when they become amnestied citizens? We should give no thought to to their additional pressure on scarce resources both financial and natural ones like water. This leftist scumbag is an open border libertardians dream come true.

Immigrants contribute more than what they "take in". So it's a lie they sponge off American taxpayers.

    3. @Francisco, And you know this how? I call bullshit. The cities with the largest migrant populations are also the most highly taxed and perpetually broke. Shouldn't they be the most prosperous?

    4. Re Obrador's statement, it's weird that he would defend the right of, among others, Mexicans to emigrate to the US, FROM Mexico. And to say that they're doing so "by necessity." I would have thought that he'd say that he's going to make Mexico a more attractive place to live so that fewer Mexicans would leave.

A report commissioned by H.H.S. whose findings were 'suppressed' by Trump's administration - Robert reported this just a week ago. It showed exactly what I said: That immigrants contribute more than what they take in.

── The cities with the largest migrant populations are also the most highly taxed and perpetually broke.──

You mean cities like Houston, TX?

Who is peddling bullsh¡t now, Rob?

The man is an a55. An ignorant, illiterate a55. People in Mexico know he is an a55. The problem is that Mexico has suffered through a series of a55es that at this point, voting for the king of a55es seems like a good way to show that the people have a sense of humor. Hopefully he won't enjoy a pliable and willing Congress and Senate but the fear is there that he's going to turn Mexico into Venezuela, which would mean an unmeasurable disaster for such a big country.

  5. A Mexican (old) (girl)friend who grew up in and currently lives in Mexico asked me via text if I heard about the elections in Mexico and what is said about Lopez Obrador in the US. After telling her I hear he is a lefty she responded:

“It’s correct. We (the "thinking class"-although it sounds arrogant-) are worried. But I could see it coming...that is the result of the despair, impotence and pain caused by so much injustice, violence, death, impunity and corruption added to the lack of education and political, social and economic knowledge that prevails in the majority of the Mexican people.”

  6. Some of that statement by Lopez Obrador may be based in the fact that many Mexicans believe the USA stole from them much of the current USA southwest.

Mexicans have a good point here. The USA did in fact coercively obtained territory that was once considered Mexico. But if we are going to try to figure out who has rights to that land, how far back in history do we go and who makes those decisions?

    1. Mexico lost the war because they were being lazy mexicans and decided to take a nap and not post sentries, subsequently getting their asses handed to them at San Jacinto.

Probably because you're a Trumpista (i.e. of stilted intellect) you're confusing the Texas revolution with the Mexican-American war.

    3. He wasn't really specific in stating which war your lazy ancestors lost, subsequently ceding territory to more successful whites.

  7. Greater wealth, prosperity and a rising standard of living will be the best remedy for socialism and State-worship. Ergo, in the U.S. we should enhance free-trade by eliminating all protectionism. Also, an immediate end to the War on Drugs (i.e., the War on People) would bring much stability to Mexico.
BOTH these measures---freer trade and an end to the Drug War---would likewise reduce the pressures that compel immigration to the U.S. It's a win-win.

    1. Actually, greater economic freedom in the US would increase wages and possibly attract even more immigration. (Still a win-win in my book.)
