BREAKING Former Head of Security for the Senate Intelligence Committee Has Been Arrested and Charged with Lying to the FBI

James A. Wolfe, former head of security for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has been indicted and arrested on charges of making false statements to special agents of the FBI during the course of an investigation into the unlawful disclosure of classified information, according to the Justice Department.

This is a developing story, Return to this post for updates.

UPDATE 1

At the time he made the alleged false statements to the FBI, Wolfe was Director of Security for the SSCI, a position he held for approximately 29 years.

As SSCI Director of Security, Wolfe was entrusted with access to classified SECRET and TOP SECRET information provided by the Executive Branch, including the U.S. Intelligence Community, to the SSCI.

UPDATE 2

Wolfe is alleged to have lied to FBI agents in December 2017 about his repeated contacts with three reporters, including through his use of encrypted messaging applications.  Wolfe is further alleged to have made false statements to the FBI about providing two reporters with non-public information related to the matters occurring before the SSCI.

UPDATE 3

Wolfe was arrested on June 7, 2018, and is expected to make his first appearance Friday, June 8, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

UPDATE 4

Bottom line: They just nailed a leaker and, under Trump, they are going to crucify him.

UPDATE 5

“This decision by the Justice Dept. will endanger reporters ability to promise confidentiality to their sources and undermine the ability of a free press to shine a light on government actions. That should be a grave concern to anyone who cares about an informed citizenry.”

UPDATE 6

Via the New York Times:

Wolfe stopped performing committee work in December and retired in May.

  1. There's a lot of rumors circulating on twitter about the young & attractive Ali Watkins' reporting methods since she was romantically involved with the 57-year old Wolfe and has been breaking stories on classified intelligence since she was a 22-year old journo major in college. Stay tuned and grab some popcorn.

  2. "making false statements to special agents of the FBI"

Just another example of the double standards which the population seems to accept when it comes to individuals at the state. It is OK for the individuals at the state to make false statements to us (pretty much all of the time, and the FBI is particularly adept at this in conducting its investigations), but say one wrong word to them and the average Joe is history. When is the population going to wake up and demand that every human live by the same behavioral code?

    1. Is there a law against the FBI making false statements to you?

    2. No, but I'm not sure why you're asking. My point is to criticize the state's double standard (it is the state which establishes the law), in which the non-libertarian population acquiesces.

  3. Just curious: is lying to an FBI agent (or the Police) when you are not under oath an actual law passed by Congress?
