Get Well, Lew!

Mises Institute president Jeff Deist has put out an update on the recovery of Lew Rockwell from a recent back injury.

Lew is, in my book, the most important libertarian entrepreneur of the current era. Austrian economics, libertarianism, Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard would
be nowhere near as popular as they are now if it were not for Lew.

Jeff is absolutely correct when he writes:
More than anything, we owe Lew gratitude for having the foresight to create the Mises Institute in 1982. It was his relationships with people like Margit von Mises, Murray Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, Ron Paul, and Leonard Read that finally convinced him to give up a far more lucrative think-tank career and undertake the thankless task of building a radical new organization.

Without a salary, without a building, and without wealthy benefactors, Lew set about using his typewriter and kitchen table to put Austrian economics back on the map. Remember that while Rothbard’s Man, Economy, and State and the famous South Royalton conference both helped resuscitate the flagging Austrian school in the 1960s and 70s, the landscape for Austro-libertarian thought remained extremely challenging. The creation of the Mises Institute provided a sorely-needed beacon of hope and visibility. Henry Hazlitt especially appreciated Lew’s “giving Murray a platform.”
And there was nothing easy about Lew building the Mises Institute, he literally had to battle powerful forces. Depending on how in sync we are on current libertarian issues of the day, for long periods I can be in touch with Lew by phone three or four times a day, at other times only once every couple of months, but I can vouch that Lew is very tough when it comes to principle. A lesser man would never have accomplished as much as Lew has to date.

Get well, Lew. There are more battles to fight!

  1. I have been wondering if there was a health issue, I must have missed any announcements before this. He seemed to be so low-key this year. Glad he is on the mend, Lew is one of a kind and we need him as long as possible.

  3. Our task is to educate our fellow men on the fundamental principles of economics and the true nature of government. The Mises Institute and Lew Rockwell are #1 in my book.

  4. Praying for you to get well Lew, you have done so much for my education and walk in the Anarcho-Capitalist journey, and my whole family for that matter. Such an encouraging man, never compromising what is right and always standing for the Truth. Many of our lives would be different for the worse without you.
