Foreign Students Have Begun to Shun the United States

Welcome to Trump World.

Axios reports:
In a potential threat to future U.S. innovation, new international enrollment at U.S. colleges is down for the first time in more than a decade, according to a new report. It is the first hard sign that the Trump administration's rhetoric may be frightening away some of the world's best and brightest who traditionally have been drawn to settle and work in the U.S....
The findings are from
the Institute of International Education's annual Open Doors report and its smaller joint "snapshot" report on international enrollment. It found that new international student enrollment dropped by 3.3% for the 2016-2017 academic year, and by a far higher 6.9% in the Fall 2017 semester. Peggy Blumenthal, IIE's Senior Counselor to the President, told Axios that it was the first time the organization had seen a drop in the 12 years it had been collecting this data.

  1. International students have generally very limited aid options. Schools recruit them because it's cold hard cash at full price or closer to it for them. So how were the ever increasing prices eliminated as a cause? Just because it hasn't gone down in 12 years doesn't mean the prices have not hit a threshold where demand begins to fall.

Trump may be a factor, but before 'because Trump' other obvious factors like price should be eliminated.

  2. The government funded university system in the U.S. is full of people who love to blame others for their shortcomings. Sounds like the international students are beginning to wise up to the high cost low quality service that is inevitable when subsidized by government.

  3. Yep. Why pay tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of fiat dollars or go into the same amount of debt for what can be had for between $15k to $25? Talk about a commodity bubble. Except for a few select degrees from a few select institutions, dont waste your money, or mommy's and daddy's money.

  4. At least some of the illegal immigrants are self deporting under Trump. We don't need any more greencard holders or legal immigration or H1's either. It would be great to kick most of them out at this time. Anyone who thinks the unemployment rate is single digits even among white collar workers is an idiot.

American education even in STEM is becoming a waste of money as well.
