Florida Governor Declares State of Emergency as "Threat Is Imminent"

Richard Spencer, white nationalist
Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in a Florida county ahead of a planned speech by white nationalist leader Richard Spencer.

Spencer is scheduled to
speak at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville on Thursday.

Scott declared the state of emergency in Alachua County, noting that Spencer's speeches in other states have in the past "sparked protests and counter-protests resulting in episodes of violence, civil unrest and multiple arrests," according to the Tampa Bay Times.

I find that the threat of a potential emergency is imminent,” Scott said in a seven-page executive order.

Scott said in a statement that everyone has a right to voice their opinions.

But, he said, "we have zero tolerance for violence and public safety is always our number one priority."

"I have been in constant contact with Sheriff [Sadie] Darnell who has requested this Executive Order to ensure that county and local law enforcement have every needed resource," Scott said in the statement.

"This executive order is an additional step to ensure that the University of Florida and the entire community is prepared so everyone can stay safe,” he said.

  1. I wonder if The Hill would use a photo of Hillary that looked like that.

    1. Tom,

I was going to jump down your throat for coming to this guy's defense, so I went hunting for some horrible quotes to rub in your face, but I was disappointed to find that there wasn't all that much there.

Sure, he's a statist, and a silly white nationalist and the faith he had in Trump was pathetically naive, but he apparently hasn't said much that's truly inflammatory, at least not compared to some of the things I read every day in online comment sections. I certainly wouldn't be friends with the guy but it's interesting that he's been singled out as some uniquely horrible monster.

    2. It's not a question of coming to his defense. We already understand we're not to like this guy, so what is the value in a propagandistic photo like this? How low of an IQ do they think we have? We already know he's a bad guy.

I just find it a creepy, Orwellian example of how the modern media operate.

    3. I recommend that the PRD of the DPRK offer the NYT a chance to do a photo shoot with Kim, where he is on the velvet couch in his underwear like the famous George Costanza photo shoot.

Then maybe the drums of war will stop beating. Oh wait, that would play into his CIA-Hollywood created character as the madman, further proving your excellent point.

  3. A white person standing up for their group's interests? That certainly cannot be allowed. I'm sure other (((interest groups))) will find a way to have this speech shut down.

  4. It appears to me that the main motive of 90% of humans is getting attention. Not me of course, but everyone else.

  5. The King of the Alt Right, Vox Day, has outed Mr. Spencer:

We should have known this, on the principle that a) SJWs always project and b) SJWs always seek to infiltrate.

I remember being surprised when I interviewed Richard Spencer and discovered him to be to the Left of the entire Brainstorm community and surprisingly vague about anything that was policy related. This was the great extremist, the outlaw intellectual? My initial assumption was that he simply had poor judgment and hadn't really formulated his political philosophy, especially when he went from one public relations debacle to the next without ever managing to accomplish anything substantial or do anything useful.

But it wasn't until I discovered that Spencer had opposed Brexit and supported the European Union that I began to conclude that he, and at least a portion of what I called the Alt White, were not even of the ideological Right at all. I soon got confirmation from Greg Johnson, Andrew Anglin, and their fellow travellers, as they tried to simultaneously - and dishonestly - argue that a) they were the most extreme right of the right-wing, b) any criticism of them was "punching right", and c) the terms of left and right were outdated and meaningless.

I don't know about you, but anyone who has read SJWADD will recognize that form of rhetorical sophistry. It is ambiguity.

    ******

And when I had the opportunity to see how Spencer had treated his authors, how he had not paid them or even reported book sales to them for literal years, how he had gone dark rather than respond to repeated telephone calls and emails, I understood that his character was very, very different than he sought to portray it to be.

If Mr. Spencer wants to live in a private community limited to people who are "white like Spencer", why does anyone care? Seriously. After announcing and enforcing the nature of the community, they will be the people who have to get jobs or customers from the rest of society. It's their problem, not ours.
