U.S. Increases 'Combat Power' in Syria

The U.S. military said on Thursday it had bolstered its "combat power" in southern Syria, warning that it viewed Iran-backed fighters in the area as a threat to nearby coalition troops fighting Islamic State, reports Reuters.

"We have increased our presence and our footprint and prepared for any threat that is presented by the pro-regime forces," said the spokesman, U.S. Army Colonel Ryan Dillon, referring to Iran-backed forces supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

According to Reuters:
This southeastern area of the Syrian desert, known as the Badia, has become an important front in Syria's civil war between Assad, backed by Iran and Shi'ite militias, and rebels seeking to oust him.

They are competing to capture land held by Islamic State, which is retreating as it comes under intense attack in Iraq and along Syria's Euphrates basin.

Western-backed Syrian rebels said on Wednesday that Russian jets attacked them as they tried to advance against Iran-backed militias.

U.S.-backed rebels took Tanf from Islamic State last year, and regional intelligence sources say they mean to use it as a launchpad to capture Bukamal, a town on Syria's border with Iraq and an important jihadist supply route.

The coalition's presence in Tanf, on the Damascus-Baghdad highway, was also meant to stop Iran-backed groups from opening an overland route between Iraq and Syria, the sources say.

Damascus has declared the Badia and Deir al-Zor priorities in its campaign to re-establish control over Syria, which has been shattered by six years of a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.

  2. Why is the US involved in this mess?

Why are 99.99% of Americans silent while they stare at their feet when presented with unassailable evidence of these horrors conducted by both Obama and Trump?

    1. I suggest they have no hard reasons to care. Taxes are not historically high and participation rates in the military are on the low end historically. Until price inflation follows this monetary inflation, conscription, taxation, or economic collapse due to default, people won't care that much. What is nearly as repugnant is the salute the flag crap, though, that gives the politicians and Imperial Soldiers the warm and fuzzies they desire while wrecking the world.

Because they're in a race with House of Cards to see who can "save" Syria.

  4. Hooray! I was thinking just this morning that the U.S. has gotten entirely too isolationist lately. During the Vietnam war, you'd see counts of enemy bodies posted each week numbering in the thousands. Why can't we bring back those wonderful years? Sure, we had a few tens of thousands of American troops killed, and occasionally today we hear of evidence that a few who survived got a bit screwed up in the head, but think of the glory! Think of how the economy is boosted, the more weapons we manufacture and use. We need to ratchet up our presence throughout the world, so that today's young men and women experience the full spectrum of delights that foreign wars can bring.

  5. How about AIPAC, the ADL, the SPLC, and Jewish Americans for starters?
