Foreigners who want to visit the U.S., even for a short trip, could be forced to disclose contacts on their mobile phones, social-media passwords and financial records, and to answer probing questions about their ideology, reports The Wall Street Journal.
If there is any doubt about a person’s intentions coming to the United States, they should have to overcome—really and truly prove to our satisfaction—that they are coming for legitimate reasons,” said Gene Hamilton, senior counselor to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.
According to the Journal, the changes might even apply to visitors from the 38 countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program, which requires adherence to strict U.S. standards in data sharing, passport control and other factors, one senior official said. That includes some of the U.S.’s closest allies, such as the U.K., Japan and Australia.
Look, Trump is a crazed authoritarian who sees no boundaries to government intervention if it will advance one of his delusional goals.
Any libertarian supporting this guy should be embarrassed.

6 days ago Betsy DeVos gave a good speech but unfortunately that wasn't mentioned on this blog. "Open enrollment, tax credits, home schools, magnets, charters, virtual schools, education savings accounts and choices not yet developed all have their place..." I expect she will move the education system towards more liberty.

It seems inevitable to me that Trump will grow increasingly frustrated as his delusional fantasies about how he can change the world by snapping his fingers get smashed one after another. What will he do then? Will he grow more contemplative and humble? Ha ha! Or will he become more autocratic and dictatorial, determined to raise the stakes with each new scheme? I don't see him resigning in frustration, or being kicked out through impeachment. We do live in interesting times.
I don't agree with the policy, however if I were nationalist and libertarian I think there may be an argument to support this. Foreigners don't - and ought not to - enjoy the same protections from the State that citizens do.
ReplyDeleteMany legal scholars state that the protections in the Bill of Rights apply to citizens and non-citizens alike.
DeleteAs for the reality of what group today enjoys protections from predations of the State, I'd say there isn't one. The U.S. government does, after all, assassinate its own citizens whenever it pleases, without stooping to niceties such as charging, much less convicting, them of any crime.
