Attorney General Jeff Sessions said this morning that he doesn’t believe marijuana should be legalized.
“We have a responsibility to use our best judgment … and my view is we don’t need to be legalizing marijuana,” he said at the winter meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General.
“I’m dubious about marijuana. I’m not sure we’re going to be a better, healthier nation if we have marijuana sold at every corner grocery store.”
He called for local law enforcement to be tougher on drugs. He said President Trump has directed him to lead an effort against international drug cartels.
The Department of Justice announced this morning that it has created a task force to reduce crime and improve public safety. Its members will include the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the director of the FBI and the director of the U.S. Marshals Service.
It's pretty easy to read between the lines here and see that the Trump administration is setting up for a major crackdown on victimless "crime."
Trump is going to be horrific on domestic and foreign policy. Libertarian support for Trump is a mistake.

The Machiavellian streak that runs through Jeff Sessions soul harkens back to when California Governor Ronald Reagan, and J. Edgar Hoover colluded to imprison drug users and Vietnam War protestors on college campuses in 1969. This crackdown on Hippies was not limited to college campuses, it was pervasive in Los Angeles county where I witnessed it first hand at the age of 15.
ReplyDeleteThe Police State of 1969 was conjured by by men who spoke of liberty but delivered a brutal beatdown on anyone who was outside of their very narrowly defined view of the First Amendment.
Fast forward 49 years to once again taste the bitter fruit of men colluding in private to breath new life into their dream of a state of the art dystopian police state. The dream of the nation being a giant prison yard never really died, and is now advancing on us at the pace of a blitzkrieg.

ReplyDeleteYou may be right, but when I read between the lines, I still see a major release of hot air (already in motion) and little else, at least on the marijuana front. Of course Trump's ill-informed gaseous emissions are reprehensible, and if he does follow through in any meaningful way, that will be even more reprehensible, but unless he starts WW-III I still fear Hideous Hillary (who is apparently looking at another run in 2020) even more.

Certainly now that he's in office and it's not Him vs. Her, I agree.
We will have to see if Trump sticks to his state's rights position. The marijuana issue is a waste of taxpayer resources to lock people up for it. County jails are already full of people for drug offenses and costing local taxpayer money.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for synthetic marijuana either which has become a problem, but letting people die from using it would probably make people think twice about it.
Conservatives for the Nanny State. The same arguments drug warriors put out are the same arguments gun grabbers use.
