Trump DHS Pick: U.S. Pot Legalization Efforts Are Harming War On Drugs

The Huffington Post reported in 2014:
Two top military officials suggested at a congressional hearing Tuesday that the push by many U.S. states to legalize marijuana has rattled the confidence of some of America’s closest allies in the war on drugs.

Countries like Colombia and Nicaragua are “confused by the signals that our legalization sends, and when they’re investing so much in resources and blood they have to question that,” said Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr., the head of the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The word hypocrite comes into the conversation,” added Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, the head of the U.S. Southern Command, which coordinates military operations in the Caribbean and Latin America. “We seemingly are not caring about drugs anymore.”...

Last month, Kelly claimed at a Senate hearing that budget cuts had effectively forced him to “simply sit and watch” as drug traffickers went about their business. He also said at the time that Latin American leaders were “in disbelief” about the marijuana legalization in Washington and Colorado, and wanted to “stay shoulder to shoulder with us in the drug fight in their part of the world.”...

Kelly also said at the hearing that Latin American partners are concerned not only about pot, but what they see as “a general lack of enforcement in getting after some of these other drugs.”
Kelly is Donald Trump's choice to head the Department of Homeland Security.

You are absolutely in denial if you think things are going to get better under Trump on either the domestic or foreign policy front.

Trump is putting into place near Banana Republic authoritarians.

Nobody expected 'better.' We expected less worse.
Those countries mad about marijuana legalization are probably upset that all those marijuana profits are staying in the US.

    1. Thats my line of thinking with the outrage of these leaders. Many of them probably get kick backs from the various drug cartels to keep it illegal

Anyone that thinks Trump would be worse then Hillary lives in a City like San Francisco, Los Angles or New York. $15 minimum wage and free education for all. Through in $5,000 at birth, if I remember correctly.

That's like 1940's Germans saying "Efforts to publicize that we've got nasty concentration camps are harming our progress in dealing with the Jewish problem." We can only hope!

Rob: "Nobody expected 'better.' We expected less worse." Exactly. And in fact, I expect the drug war to continue to lose support, whether Trump and his minions like it or not. Even as states whine about Colorado and other regions that have legalized recreational marijuana use, their legislators see the millions of tax revenue dollars being raked in, and they WILL follow suit. They don't give a damn about our freedom, but they do care about money.
