China: Trump's One China Comments 'Risk Taiwan Peace'

The BBC reports:
Beijing has warned the incoming US administration that any attempt to challenge the "One China" policy could impact on peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Interference may also damage developing US-China relations, a spokesman said.
Under the "One China" policy, the US has formal ties with China rather than the island of Taiwan, which China sees as a breakaway province.

However, US President-elect Donald Trump has expressed doubts about continuing to abide by the policy.
Mr Trump had already angered China by taking a phone call from Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, and then tweeting about it.
On Monday, China said it was "seriously concerned" by Mr Trump's comments, and urged sensitivity around the issue.
But An Fengshan, a spokesman for China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office, went further on Wednesday, warning of more serious consequences.
"Upholding the "One China" principle is the political basis of developing China-US relations, and is the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," he said.
"If this basis is interfered with or damaged then the healthy, stable development of China-US relations is out of the question, and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will be seriously impacted," he added.
The idea held by some libertarians that Donald Trump will be less reckless and aggressive than previous administrations is a serious misreading of Trump. He may not be as belligerent toward Russia but the world is a lot bigger than Russia.

He may not want to nation build but he does see the need for US overseas interference for other reasons.

And while he doesn't want to nation build, he has top advisers who see it as the role of the United States to change the views and thinking within the Islamic religion, all of it, at a fundamental level.

  1. Not saying either is right/wrong but how is this any different than Obama and Israel/Palestine? Like China, Israel doesn't want a two-state solution. Why don't we butt out of that one? Obama/Jimmy Carter are bleeding heart progressive heroes and somehow Trump is a cultural ignoramus bully.

I'm not going to start buying into the media narrative now. Instead I think Trump is throwing jabs at the Chinese to set up his left hook. He is "taking" Taiwan/One China so he can give it back later in trade and other negotiations. The Communist Chinese authoritarians save face while Trump makes off with his ask.

  2. I agree that Trump's intent may have been belligerent, however, there is no reason the U.S. government should be intimidated by talking to other countries' governments. If anything, it should be doing more of that.

That it can cause animosity is a general problem with nation-states, and one of the reason they are bad.

  3. It was just a phone call.

If anything this is an excellent test. Had Trump failed to pick up the phone call the media would have criticized him for being weak on China.

  4. the problem is the One China policy is a obsolete cold war relic designed to split the Soviet Union and then maoist China.

  5. Is not Trump engaging with Taiwan in a peaceful cooperative manner, or any other peaceful entity that may want to secede from a government, in line with what is endorsed in this blog?

I agree with Matt@Occidentalism.org, "If anything this is an excellent test. Had Trump failed to pick up the phone call the media would have criticized him for being weak on China."

The USA dealing direct with Taiwan may cause trouble but if The USA remains fair and peaceful in its dealings with both China and Taiwan the USA takes the ethical high ground and China will have to deal with a PR problem.

I realize that the USA remaining fair and peaceful is not likely based on history and the likely Trump cabinet but so are the use of nukes by either side. Military involvement due to this subject will probably be limited to the region.
