CALEXIT: Revolution is Not Always a Good Thing

I am getting inundated with emails on the Calexit movement.

Business Insider explains the development:
A fringe political group in California wants to opt out of a Donald Trump presidency by leaving the union.

The Yes California Independence Campaign aims to put a referendum on a 2018 ballot that, if passed, would make California an independent country.

Far-fetched as it may sound, the plan started gathering steam after Tuesday night's surprising vote. The movement has an impressive backer in Shervin Pishevar, a well-known angel investor who offered to bankroll the campaign.

"As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland. Point by point, California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states," Yes California wrote in a statement.
I continue to warn that revolutions and secessions in and of themselves are not always a move in a positive direction. Keep in mind that Lenin and Mao both came to power as the result of revolutions.

I am no fan of big government but I hate to think what kind of whacko government would emerge in California given the number of lefty wackos in the state.

Focus should be on the long and difficult task of converting the masses to at least a gut level appreciation of liberty rather than promoting revolutions and secessions before the masses are likely to introduce liberty.

All this said it will be a plus for the rest of the country if the wacko left secedes. If Cali does secede, I may buy some gloves and move to, I don't know, maybe Chicago.

  1. What better way to starve the Federal Leviathan than to deprive it of taxes from CA. If CA can secede, why can't counties or cities?

  2. Wrong Bob. If the people of Cali want to secede, that is their choice and it's not up to me as a non-Californian to teach them about liberty first. They are at liberty to decide. Maybe it is time you pack.

    1. This is entirely true. As a matter of fact, why would it be different for libertarians if a more statist area secedes from a less statist one, than if a less statist one secedes from a more statist one? And why would it be required for a seceding state to subscribe fully to a 100& libertarian agenda? It could not possibly ever be fully libertarian under the rule of an authoritarian federal state anyway, so waiting for that to happen is basically to say there should be no secession, period.

  3. Chicago? Are you crazy? Best head to a border state for easy escape when SHTF!

  4. Does anyone realistically think the federal government would walk out of California peacefully?

    1. Now that Oregon also wants to play secession ball, it's a matter of time before more states follow suit. That progressives want to secede is a a good sign which will prompt more people to google secession and ask more questions and not rely on mass media for their answers. The Trump Revolution continues albeit in different directions.

    2. No, but I would think anyone who hates the State would be encouraging (and be encouraged by) it.

This is an historic moment with implications that should be embraced.

    3. If California leaves, others are sure to follow. I think you have called this one wrong, Bob.

  5. Secession: Always a good thing. I differentiate secession and revolution.

  6. Secession no matter what the ideology behind it should be supported under the guise of de-centralization.

    1. Absolutely. This post by Bob is very troubling.

  7. Though I doubt the Deep State would allow them to go alone, and the mere provocation will be thoroughly dismissed by house organs such as WaPo and NYTimes if it becomes more than a momentary meme, if it escapes the clutches of the corporate media then ALL Libertarians should support it.

All decentralization should be embraced, even if it means leaving people with warped economic views to manage their own government. If the majority embraces socialism, no amount of education will help until they see the problems themselves.

Without Cascadia the Democrats would be even more drastically reduced as a major party. If the New England states joined them, Republicans would be a unipolar power, ripe for libertarian dissent. The more socialists cities would slowly die while the South and Midwest would thrive if libertarianism is the path to peace and prosperity.

  8. I wouldn't equate secession and revolution.

Secession is always good, and unless you are in the country seceding, in which case it's a mixed bag. In this case, good for America, bad for Wenzel.

  9. Buh by! Let them go! Maybe we can have a real life demonstration of how terrible their economic ideas are as business leave them in droves. In no time there will be nothing left but tax consumers with no one to pay the bills. They will be in hyper inflation in 1 year.

  10. Leftie California politicos would be constrained by the pressure of taxpaying citizens and businesses voting with their feet. Viva Calexit!

  11. The only sad thing about Calexit is that there are no lines to intie to un-moor Cali.
There are a few southern flag designs they can borrow.
Please dear Lord let them secede in peace and Oregon and Washington ...

  12. I just got out of there ! In 2017 it will be illegal to loan a firearm to another person, even your own children. Government mandated $0.25 charge for every paper bag from a store or face a stiff fine. The Golden Gate Bridge is now cashless, mandating that you have a bank account and a chip to carry in your car. Of course, your picture is taken and your entrance to the city time-stamped as you drive in. This would not be a problem if they had even one lane as a cash option, they don't . A fee for your waiter/waitress's health insurance is added to your restaurant bill. The list goes on and on... San Francisco has become a cesspool of both thought and action.

  13. I live in California. They are run by a bunch of really insane wackjobs. It won't be long before the state will turn to no-man's-land because liberals would welcome anyone to their state. I mean ANYONE. Plus they would offer massive welfare healthcare you name it to every living creature. Guess what will that do? 3rd world people from all across the globe would flow through the Mexican border in their quest for a free Utopia. That alone will destroy the state and eat it from within. By the time liberals wake up it'll be far too late. I guarantee you that.

  14. Forget secession. Is there a mechanism to expel a state?

  15. Think it depends on which side of the border you sit on. For those of us not in Cali it would be addition by subtraction.
