What are the Most Peaceful Countries in the World?

The Global Peace Index, issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks 162 independent states covering 99.6% of the world’s population, these are their findings:

The 10 most peaceful countries

Iceland
Denmark
Austria
New Zealand
Switzerland
Finland
Canada
Japan
Australia
Czech Republic

The 10 least peaceful countries

Syria
Iraq
Afghanistan
South Sudan
Central African Republic
Somalia
Sudan
DR Congo
Pakistan
North Korea

According to GPI:

The Global Peace Index is a composite index comprised of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators that gauge the level of peace in 162 countries. These indicators can be grouped into three broad themes: the level of safety and security in a society, the number of international and domestic conflicts and the degree of militarization.

  1. Regarding the least peaceful. It's hard to take serious a list that doesn't include the United States and have them at #1.

  2. It doesn't appear that they take into consideration government violence aka laws, taxation, etc. Only 'militarization' is mentioned. Hard to take this report that seriously.
